    Note: on using a root cellar. Fruits and vegetables stored in one have to be checked periodically for spoilage. Remember the old saying "one bad apple can spoil the whole barrel"? I just brought out some winter squash that should have been good for at least 2 more months. They may have been brusied when they went into storage. I bought them off a wagon in the middle of a field last fall from an Amish farmer. I think I paid all of .50 cents apiece for about 20 of them. Maybe some cream squash soup with shitaki mushrooms tonight....

      Thanks to all of you for posting so much info on root cellars.

      My grandmother treasured her basement root cellar. She was always down there dragging up wonderful food.

      Not many of us in Oklahoma have basements, so I'll have to think about building something outdoors to use.

      As usual, there's a wealth of information and first person wisdom here to lean on. Thank you!
