Indonesia has recorded human bird flu deaths regularly since the virus began ravaging poultry stocks across Asia in 2003.

Scientists have warned that Indonesia, which has millions of backyard chickens and poor medical facilities, is a potential hot spot for a global bird flu pandemic.

          Posted : Mon, 28 Jan 2008

Jakarta - A 9-year-old boy from West Java died from the H5N1 strain of the avian influenza virus, bringing Indonesia's bird flu death toll to 99, the world's highest, Health Ministry officials said on Monday. The boy fell sick January 16 and sought medical treatment a week later at Sentra Medika Hospital in western Jakarta before being admitted Friday to Sulianti Saroso Hospital, designated to treat bird flu patients in Jakarta and surrounding areas.

"Test results confirm he had been suffering from bird flu," Suyono said

Investigators were still trying to determine how the boy was exposed to the virus, but a chicken-slaughtering site was located in his neighbourhood, he said.

No, today's report was the first time I heard from the boy.

We learned before, that news from Jakarta Hospitals seems not to be released until confirmation from the lab of Dep. of Health.

This was a previous, recent case. The risk factor was a slaughterhouse nearby. It was a child.

JAKARTA, Jan 28 (Reuters) - A 9-year-old Indonesian boy who had tested positive for bird flu died on Monday, the health ministry said in a statement, taking the country's death toll from the deadly disease to 99.

The boy from the outskirts of Jakarta died at the Sulianto Saroso hospital on Sunday after being treated in different hospitals for two weeks, said Joko Suyono, an official at the ministry's bird flu information centre.

It was not known how the boy contracted the disease.

Indonesia has had the highest number of human deaths from bird flu of any country.

A 31-year-old woman and 32-year-old man hospitalised at Persahabatan hospital for fever and respiratory problems also tested positive for the deadly H5N1 virus on Monday, the ministry said.

According to the statement, the woman lived in East Jakarta near a poultry slaughterhouse that kept many fowl believed to be the source of her H5N1 infection.

The man from Tangerang, west of Jakarta, is believed to have contracted H5N1 from his neighbour's pet doves, the ministry said.

Contact with sick fowl is the most common way of contracting bird flu, endemic in bird populations in most of Indonesia.

Although bird flu remains an animal disease, experts fear the virus could mutate into a form easily passed from human to human and kill millions.

Authorities are also expecting genetic test results to come back for a fourth case, a 23-year-old housewife from East Jakarta, who died on Sunday from bird flu symptoms.

Suyono said there are no obvious explanation for the sudden surge of cases. "We need to carry more tests and investigation first to be really sure.

                    I found it:

Villagers Main Lightning, Long Rt 05/ Rw 3, the Tangerang City, many that did not suppose if Setia went so fast. In fact, around them did not have the chicken that died. However indeed around 500 metre from the house of Untung had a slaughterhouse in the chicken.
I was hoping it was not Seti. But it is. They (Seti & MIY) were both brought to RSPI Sulianti Saroso, Jakarta.

ETA: I will watch for a more specific address on MIY, to see if they were neighbors.
