        -----------------------------------------------------
The highly pathogenic virus of bird flu has been found again in
Crimea. 2 hens and a rooster were found dead in a private yard in the
village Kirovskoe of the Chernmorskoe region. Specimens, taken from
dead birds and from additional 2 hens and 2 ducks, have reacted
positive for DNA of influenza A, serotype H5 on 6 Feb 2008.
Additional samples have been sent to the State Research Institute for
Laboratory Diagnostic and Veterinary and Sanitary Expertise, Kiev
        (national laboratory), for reconfirmation.

The bird-flu virus was found on 18 Jan 2008 in a bird farm of the
village Rovnoe, Krasnogvargeyskoe region, Crimea. The virus was

          Another H5N1 Outbreak in Ukraine

          February 8, 2008

In the village Kirovski Black Sea region of Crimea in the private courtyard case detected in poultry.

The above translation describes another H5N1 outbreak on the Ukraine peninsula (see satellite map). This report follows an earlier outbreak in the Ukraine, as well as multiple outbreaks on the Black Sea shores of Turkey.

These multiple reports signal increased activity in areas frequented by wild birds, but the outbreaks are being reported on farms, once again signaling shortfalls in wild bird surveillance in the region.

More outbreaks in the near term are expected.

The above translation describes the detection of H5N1 in wild migratory birds on the Crimea peninsula. The detection is not a surprise. Ukraine has already reported two outbreaks in poultry this season, as have multiple locations near the shores of the Black Sea (see satellite map). These poultry deaths signal H5N1 presence in wild birds in the region.

More H5N1 in the region in wild birds and poultry farms is expected.
