Indonesian minister plays down HFMD spreading
[SARS and EV71 or Coxackie A16 are quite different viruses and clinical courses cannot be compared, as well as epidemiological behaviour. IOH]

    JAKARTA, May 8 (Xinhua) --

Indonesian Health Minister Siti Fadilah Sufari played down the danger of the hand-foot-mouth disease (HFMD) in Indonesia on Thursday, as three people have been suspected of having the disease.

"In Indonesia the manifestation of the hand-foot-mouth disease is not so serious, as it is reported in other country," she told reporters at the State Palace here.

The minister said that the disease used to emerge in Indonesia in 2006, infecting one child who then recovered.

The minister made an example on Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) which hit seriously in Singapore years ago.

"Like SARS, when it entered Indonesia, it was not too dangerous," she said.

The hand-foot-mouth disease is caused by a virus that causes small, blister-like bumps in the mouth, hands and feet. The blisters may also appear in the diaper area and on the legs and arms.
