He said the government should not shrug off the responsibility of stopping the chicken smuggling problem.

The suggestion by top Hong Kong University microbiologists Yuen Kwok-yung and Ho Pak- leung to ban vendors from keeping live chickens overnight was immediately backed by the government as a transitional measure before starting a central slaughtering system in 2011, at the earliest.

The call for a ban came after more than 5,000 chickens were culled on Wednesday after some were found infected with the deadly H5N1 virus.

The microbiologists' proposal resulted in Yuen's office receiving a threatening call. Yuen, who declined to say who received the call, said resistance against the proposal was to be expected.

Ho refused to comment.

Wong said he did not hear of and does not condone such illegal behavior. The industry was angry at the microbiologists in the past for warning the public of virus mutation, making consumers lose confidence in eating chicken.

Chicken trader Lau Chung-sun hopes the government will allow the sale of chilled chickens during the 21-day ban on fresh chicken.
