Vietnam reports additional bird flu-hit province

HANOI, June 17 (Xinhua) -- Vietnam's central Quang Ngai province has been stricken by bird flu, raising the number of affected localities to two, local newspapers reported Tuesday.

Bird flu has killed 690 chickens raised by a household in Son Tinh district since June 12, People newspaper said, noting that Quang Ngai and southern Tra Vinh province are being hit by the disease.

Bird flu outbreaks are cooling down in Vietnam, but still making complicated changes, Vietnam Economic Times newspaper quoted Vietnamese Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Bui Ba Bong as saying.

Vietnam should keep on carrying out anti-bird flu activities atboth central and local levels, and intensifying the disease-related research, he said.

Vietnam is probing into over 30 variants of bird flu virus H5N1taken from affected poultry and wild birds.

Bird flu outbreaks in Vietnam, starting in December 2003, have killed and led to the forced culling of dozens of millions of fowls in the country.

Possible outbreak of blue ear disease in the south warned

Nhan Dan - Possible outbreaks of blue ear disease (porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome) in the south has been warned about.

At a meeting of the National Steering Board on June 24 in Hanoi, Bui Quang Anh, head of the Veterinary Department said that northern and central provinces have initially controlled the disease. Nhan Dan - Bird flu has occurred in Quang Ngai province, said the Veterinary Department on June 16.

The department said that the epidemic was found in My Danh village, Tinh Hiep commune, Son Tinh district, on June 12. The epidemic infected 690 chickens.

The infected chickens have been culled.

So far, Tra Vinh and Quang Ngai provinces have yet to be free from bird flu for 21 days.

Meanwhile, Kien Giang and Nghe An have been free from the epidemic for 21 days.

Foreign and domestic scientists work together on bird flu

Around 100 domestic and foreign scientists gathered at an international conference in Hanoi on June 16 to find ways to prevent and control bird flu.

Addressing the three-day workshop, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Bui Ba Bong said bird flu is temporarily under control in Vietnam but there is a risk the situation could change and become complicated.

The deputy minister called for incorporating bird flu prevention and control programmes and activities while focusing on restructuring the poultry industry and accelerating research and supervision on the epidemic.

The conference heard bird flu-related reports by international experts, including a model outlining the risk and progress of the virus, epidemiology research on viruses on different kinds of poultry, and campaigns to raise public awareness about the disease and its prevention.

Appearing in Vietnam from 2003, bird flu has caused great losses to almost all provinces and cities nationwide. However, since March 2008, no human bird flu case has been discovered in the country and the rate of poultry infected with the disease has dropped rapidly.

Head Representative of the World Food Agricultural Organisation (FAO), Andrew Speedy, said the Vietnamese government seriously acknowledged the problem right from the beginning and with an open approach and a scientific strategy, the country has succeeded in reducing the spread of the virus.

He stressed the importance of research in deciding measures to effectively rein in the epidemic and warned Vietnam to reconsider vaccination which he said was effective but costly.

At the conference, a representative of the US Departments of Agriculture (USDA), John Wade, said he was impressed with Vietnam?s success in stamping out the bird flu epidemic.

He said the USDA was committed to joining with other international organisations and support Vietnam in its long-term strategy to prevent the spread of the epidemic.

The conference was co-organised by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, FAO, the USDA and the US Agency for International Development (USAID). (VNA)
