Luxembourg Looks at Investing In Indonesia

    Wednesday, 12 November, 2008 | 21:41 WIB

TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta:Luxembourg?s Economy and Foreign Trade Minister Jeannot Krecke said the country is looking at the possibility of investing in and cooperating with industries in Indonesia. ?We are looking at investment possibilities,? he said following a meeting with Industry Minister Fahmi Idris yesterday.

He said Luxembourg excelled in the sectors of steel industry, logistics and financial services. Krecke, however, could not yet reveal the value of investment being considered. ?We are still looking for opportunities,? he said.

Krecke is also scheduled to meet with Trade Minister Mari Elka Pangestu, Finance Minister Sri Mulyani and Health Minister Siti Fadilah Supari.

Anshari Bukhari, the director ?general of Metal, Machinery, Textile and Diverse Industries said Minister Fahmi asked Luxembourg to invest in the pharmacy and agro-business sectors, like rubber. ?These are two sectors which are growing rapidly in Indonesia,? he said.

Anshari is not worried that Luxembourg?s investment plans may be impeded by Health Minister Regulation No. 1010/MENKES/PER/XI/2008 on drug registration. The regulation dated November 3, 2008 says pharmaceutical companies without distribution facilities may not register their companies. ?Luxembourg wants to build a plant here, and not just sell drugs, so it will not be subject to the regulation,? Anshari said.

Earlier, 13 international pharmaceutical companies were in danger of being affected by the Health Ministry?s regulation. They are PT Roche Indonesia, Sanofi Aventis Pasteur, PT Transfarma Medica-Indah, PT Eli Liliy, PT Wyeth Indonesia, PT Sterling, PT Astrzeneca Indonesia, PT Novo Nordisk Indonesia, PT Astellas Pharma Indonesia, PT Janssen Cilag, PT Solvay Pharma Indonesia, PT Merck Sharp & Dohme Indonesia, and PT Servier Indonesia.

Comment: my feeling is , this is not 1 cluster, but the total of (suspect) patients treated at the moment, probably coming from different villages, area's .
Not much news on bird flu coming out of Sulawesi; Poultytrade always has been very important business, especially in South Sulawesi.
"The flattest" means something like : they are "flat out", showing all the clinical symptoms of avian flu

Edit: the patients are from 1 subdistrict.

Semarang Health Agency head Tatik Suyarti said her office would work to prevent the bird flu spreading to other parts of the city.

Semarang Mayor Sukawi Sutarip said related institutions had conducted preventive actions such as temporarily closing the poultry slaughterhouse and testing DS's family and neighbors for infection. -- JP

JAKARTA, Nov 13 (Reuters) - Seventeen people from the same neighbourhood in the Indonesian city of Makassar in South Sulawesi are due to be tested for bird flu after falling sick, a health ministry official said on Thursday. Chandra Yoga Adhitama, acting director-general of communicable disease control, said the group had been hospitalised after chickens in the surrounding area suddenly died.

"Some were hospitalised yesterday and some today. I think it is a precaution by our officials after chickens died there," Adhitama said.

He described the general health condition of the 17 as good and said that blood samples had been taken and would be sent to the health ministry laboratory in Jakarta for testing.

"We are continuing to monitor their condition," he said, adding that only four of the group were adults.

Suspected cluster cases can raise concerns about rare human-to-human transmission or that the virus might have mutated into a form that can pass easily among people.

The country's largest known cluster of bird flu cases in humans occurred in May 2006 in the Karo district of North Sumatra province, where as many as 7 people in an extended family died.

The World Health Organisation said at the time that limited human-to-human transmission could not be ruled out but that the virus samples from the scene did not show any significant genetic mutations.

Bird flu remains mainly an animal disease but experts fear the H5N1 virus might mutate into a pandemic strain that would sweep the globe, possibly killing millions and hobbling economies.

Indonesia has the highest toll of any nation and a health official said on Wednesday that a 15-year-old Indonesian girl has died of bird flu in central Java, bringing the country's death toll from the disease to 113.
