        correct ?
Since there aren't clinical data about the health status of almost all the patients involved, it isn't possible to state that ''they are recovering'', because we don't know whether - with the exclusion of the seven frankly diseases (with x-rays pneumonia signs' and rapid influenza A tests positivity) - the remaining patients were symptomatic and the kinds of symptoms they suffered before hospitalization.

Hence, we have people in strict isolation AND no clear clinical picture AND no official statement about laboratory results / pathological findings AND some indication of poultry die-off in residents' area.

        -- AND --

no mention to respiratory assistance to patients / blood cells count panel (lymphocite count below the normal, as common feature of H5N1 human infection and platelets count below mean value).

Conclusion: this incidents - potentially indicative of a sustained spread of H5N1 in community (as the patients' number exceeded five, see WHO) - lacks of basic informations to determine the factual status and possible further spread into region / community, and the involvement of H5N1 avian influenza virus.

an earlier post, thank you Dutchy http://www.flutrackers.com/forum/sho...&postcount=163

Jakarta was based on the collection of several datas that entered, for the time being the Department's side of the Health concluded small the possibility 17 patients suspect bird flu (Avian Influenza/AI) that currently is treated in space of the Hospital isolation of Regional Dr Wahidin Sudirohusodo, Makassar, South Sulawesi could be indicated to be positive suffering of bird flu.

The "data that entered indeed still piece by piece." But could be concluded by the patient did not experience leukopeni (the decline in the number of white blood cells) , obviously Plh. Director General Pencegahan of the Illness and Sanitation of Lingkungan Department of Health Tjandra Yoga Aditama to the Indonesian Media, on Thursday (13/11).

According to Tjandra, 70% the positive patient bird flu had the affected characteristics leukopeni. Generally the positive sufferer content bird flu of the number of white blood cells provided through to was supervised by the range 5000 ml as a result of being infected by the virus H5N1.

Nearby leukopeni, the clinical sign that generally is to the positive patient was the hot sign, breathless, thrombositopeni (the decline in the number of blood cells in blood) and pneumonia (the infection of the lungs that caused the problem of respiration).

Despite this, Tjandra did not reject was gotten by the risk factor took the form of the death of several poultries in casualties's environment. The risk factor (close to the poultry died) indeed was available. But did not yet have the report on the poultry that died flattest H5N1 or not, he added.

However on the whole, Tjandra claimed to be information that was accepted by the Department of Health was still vague. His current, was difficult for this agency to determine the status of casualties.

            Thank you Sally.

I read the post previously, of course.

But there is a complete lack of details about the entire cluster of cases.

I am sorry but if Indonesians don't start to be more detailed and open about incidents of these kind, the danger of an uncontrolled spread in community will continue to grow, in spite of reassurances or ministry denials.

This is from the Jakarta Post. Why would they choose to not use the test results from the hospital and the university? That last paragraph sounds like the hospital will wait for the health ministry results to determine treatment?
              --------------------------------------------------------------

The hospital, he said, is still waiting for the results of blood tests from the Health Ministry.

An initial test of all the patients' blood has indicated the presence of the avian influenza virus, H5N1. The same test by the micro laboratory of Hasanuddin University's School of Medicine in Makassar indicated the same results.

Halik said the hospital had decided not to use them as an indicator or reference for the illness.

"The only results we will refer to in order to treat our patients will be those from the laboratory of the health ministry's research and development center," he said.

                From post #206:
The hospital, he said, is still waiting for the results of blood tests from the Health Ministry.

An initial test of all the patients' blood has indicated the presence of the avian influenza virus, H5N1. The same test by the micro laboratory of Hasanuddin University's School of Medicine in Makassar indicated the same results.

"The only results we will refer to in order to treat our patients will be those from the laboratory of the health ministry's research and development center," he said.

The head of the Makassar Health Agency Naisyah Tun Azikin said all the samples required for testing had been sent to Jakarta on Thursday and Friday. The results should be known within a week.

Naisyah said in anticipation of a possible increase in suspected bird flu cases, his office had prepared two additional hospitals to treat them.
"Alhamdulillah (Praise be to God), none were admitted today," Naisyah said Friday.

It sounds like the Ministry of Health has implemented full information control. If so, we may not see any more descrepancies such as local/hospital officials reporting a positive case, then the Ministry denying it days later. The Ministry may have taken care of the H5N1 'problem' in Indonesia by this simple policy: Voila! No more cases!

It IS hopeful that new suspect patients are not pouring in for treatment every day: " Naisyah said in anticipation of a possible increase in suspected bird flu cases, his office had prepared two additional hospitals to treat them.

Alhamdulillah (Praise be to God), none were admitted today," Naisyah said Friday."

This report lacks specificity. Earlier reports indicated several family members were positive for influenza A or had bronchopneumonia. However, those tests would not distinguish between H5N1 and seasonal flu.

The cumulative suspected cases could raise concerns about a rare disease transmission from person to person, or that the virus could mutate into a form that could pass easily between humans.
The largest known cluster of bird flu cases among humans occurred in May in May 2006 in the Karo district of Sumatra, where 7 people died in an extended family.
