Wilson, N.C. ? A Wilson County woman has died from the H1N1 virus, the Wilson County Health Department announced Wednesday.

Specific information about the person, or the circumstances surrounding the death, was not released.

The H1N1 virus, also known as swine flu, was first identified in April, and since then there have been 37,000 confirmed cases in the U.S. and 211 deaths. There have been 395 confirmed cases of H1N1 in North Carolina, and 11 cases in Wilson County.

Influenza-like symptoms include fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue. Some people have reported diarrhea or vomiting associated with this virus.

Like seasonal flu, the H1N1 virus can vary in severity from mild to severe.

Ways to help prevent the transmission of the H1N1 virus include:

    * Washing your hands frequently with soap and water or by using an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
    * Covering your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing.
    * Avoiding close contact with those who are sick.
    * Staying at home if you are sick.

There has been an apparent drop in public concern as North Carolina records reveal a second deadly swine flu case in a week.

"The panic mode is over," Accent Urgent Care Dr Theresa Kubicki said.

Kubicki said it's a different scene from months ago at the height of a swine flu scare. Now she said people aren't as worried.

"Not thinking about it so much," yeah, Kubicki said. "I do think so."

However just this week, two deadly cases were reported - an asthma patient in Carteret County and a pregnant woman Wilson County.

      Swine Flu claims new mother

WILSON, NC (WTVD) -- A pregnant North Carolina woman diagnosed with H1N1 Swine Flu has died just days after her baby was delivered.

The 38-year-old was first admitted to the Wilson Medical Center east of Raleigh last week. Tests showed she had the H1N1 virus.

As her condition worsened, she was transferred to WakeMed hospital in Raleigh.

"The determination was that she was sufficiently seriously ill that Wilson Med felt like she could be more appropriately cared for at WakeMed," explained Wilson Medical Center Director Felix Meyer.

According to family and friends, the woman gave birth to a healthy baby girl after she was transferred to Raleigh, but then died Wednesday.

Health officials have declined to identify the woman or comment on the specifics of the case, but say the virus can be difficult to treat if there are other health issues.

"Folks who have some other ongoing problem - pregnancy is one, age is another - all of them can cause severe complications," said Meyer.

Health officials say tests are underway for people who came in contact with the woman. So far, no one has tested positive for Swine Flu. So far, there have been 11 confirmed cases of the virus in Wilson County. Four people statewide have died.

Health officials are urging people to be proactive - especially as flu season is right around the corner.

"As we go into the fall, we want people to get their regular flu shot along with the H1N1 shot when it becomes available," offered Joyce Wetherington with the Wilson Health Department.
