Rs 1,400 for a dose of swine flu vaccine

Pune: A family in Pune was in for a shock when three of its members went to get a shot for swine flu. The doctor from Sinhagad Road charged almost Rs 1400 for the vaccine - nearly 10 times the original price, and the reason she gave for the high charges was the "quality service" rendered by her before and while administering the doses.

On top of that, the doctor also squeezed out the last drop of juice from a five-dose vaccine vial by giving six doses from it.

The actual cost of the vaccine is Rs 150 per dose.

The doctor justified the charges saying she had taken the risk of testing the vaccine on herself and even argued that giving six doses from a five-dose vial was all right.

Deepak Kokane, a resident of Manikbaug, Sinhagad Road, said his wife and two children recently went to their paediatrician for H1N1 preventive vaccination.

"The doctor told us the vaccine was available in a five-dose vial and she would give it to my family after she had found two or three other people who wanted to take the vaccine," said Kokane. "On July 25, she called my wife Rupali, son Aditya and daughter Khushi to the clinic for vaccination."

He said that besides his wife and two children, the doctor gave the vaccine from the vial to another woman and her two children.

"Firstly, how did six people get vaccinated from a five-dose vial?" said Kokane. "After the vaccination, she told my wife the charges were Rs 1,400 per person."

Kokane said his wife was taken aback by the high charges, but was even more surprised by what followed - the doctor virtually held her hostage when she said she did not have enough money on her at that moment.

"My wife had just Rs 1,500 on her as we knew the cost of the vaccine to be Rs 150 per dose and that all other clinics were giving it for Rs 250," said Kokane. "The doctor did not allow my family to leave the clinic until the money she was asking for was brought to her. This, despite the fact that my family has been going to the clinic for many years."

                    H1N1 claims four more lives

PUNE: The H1N1 influenza claimed four more lives, taking the death toll in the city to 320 since August 2009. Two of the four victims hailed from other districts of the state.

According to state health officials, Vaishali Babanrao More (35), a resident of Pulachiwadi in Shivajinagar, fell victim to the virus at the Sassoon Hospital at 5.45 am on August 8. Chaya Mahesh Shelke (21), a resident of Bangarda village in Ahmednagar district, died due to swine flu at the Sassoon Hospital at 8.30 am on August 8. Shelke had fever and cough for eight days and breathlessness since two days.

Another victim, Dhanaji Shivram Chandgude (31), a resident of Moregaon Supa in Baramati, died due to the swine flu infection at the Sassoon Hospital at 10.45 pm on August 8. Chandgude had fever, cough and cold for five days. The fourth victim Shailesh Shyamrao Kaijkar (31), a resident of Mudkhed in Nanded district, died due to swine flu at the Deenanath Manageshkar Hospital at 10 am on August 9. Kaijkar had fever, cough, running nose and body ache for eight days.

Meanwhile, 33 fresh cases of swine were detected on August 9, while the condition of 25 patients continues to be critical. All of them have been put on ventilator support at various hospitals in the district, said officials. A total of 4069 people were given Tamiflu after medical examination in the district on Monday. A total 320 patients are being treated at various hospitals. Of them, 130 have tested positive for the virus and 181 are suspected to have caught the infection, said officials. The death toll has gone up to 109 since April this year.

"It is important to break the rapid transmission of the virus now as we are well into the second wave. And the only way we can do this is to build the herd immunity' which we don't have now with the help of vaccination," say experts.

Arun Jamkar, dean of the Sassoon General Hospital said, "Already, 30 per cent of the city's population has developed natural immunity against the virus. Now with vaccines by our side, more and more people should get themselves vaccinated. This natural as well as vaccine-induced immunity will help us build herd immunity, with which the transmission of the virus can easily be cut down."

                    One succumbs in Satara

Pune: A forty five year old man succumbed to swine flu in Satara on Tuesday. With this, the death toll in Satara district has gone up to 14. The first 4 are previously reported fatalities from last Sunday, Monday. The final fatality Rajendra Jaysingh Thombre was admitted and died within hours on Tuesday morning. A 48 hour delay on the confirmation would suggest that he was not under treatment elsewhere prior to admission.
