Re: Indonesia - South Sulawesi - 30 Persons Monitored for Bird Flu - 4 Hospitalized

Some info concerning Pulau Badi, which I've also posted on the FluWiki:

Map (zoom in a bit)

also

Doing a Google search I found a paper with this title:

Mechanisms for Increasing Electricity Access for Entrepreneurs on Rural Islands of Indonesia
by J Bunting

Google had this excerpt:

involved in delivering electricity to rural entrepreneurs. The small island of Pulau Badi was chosen as an ideal case study for this subject, as the island ...

The paper is dated May 2010, so it is fairly recent.

I did a very quick scan of the paper. On page 14 it mentions that the island is about 1 square kilometer and has about 400 households. In describing the electricity generation on the island it says that generation is increased during the month of September since it is the "month of weddings and celebrations".

So...it is likely chickens and people from off the island have been brought to the island in fairly significant numbers during September. And, it sounds like it is fairly densely populated.

Not Bird Flu

Monday, October 4, 2010 | 6:06 pm
WE want to stretch around the disease experienced by some residents on the island of Badi, especially in the Village Mattirodeceng.

Indeed there are three people who died but not because of suspected bird flu or avian influenza. That's not true.
All three died of old age, stroke and tumor. Who died because of age it was 75 years old. While a stroke and tumor I do not know her age.
We actually refer to the General Hospital Pangkep but they do not want to. They are only handled by the physician clinic.
The reason all three did not want to be referred to not having sufficient funds treatment. Whereas in Pangkep we have implemented health programs for free.
I'm going to Pulau Badi tomorrow (today) to see the conditions there. Already there are doctors who we sent over there to give medical assistance. (cr1) (Cr1)

Re: Indonesia - Three Deaths in PANGKAJENE KEPULAUAN REGENCY - Not Bird Flu

A lot of bad weather and rains at the moment in several regions in Indonesia. If you do a search on "banjir" (= flood) you will find many articles.

In Jakarta hundreds of houses are flooded for instance. This is normal in times of heavy rains.

Bad weather, cold, rain in combination with poverty seems to be a receipe for ilnesses.

Apparently a medical team was sent to Pangkep Island .

excerpt:

After the Tribune reported by the Eastern edition today, the District Health Office Pangkep also been sent health teams that will help people to treat the sick.

The medical team sent by the Head of Public Health Center led directly Sarappo Kecematan Liukang Tuppabiring, Dr. Hasan Basri. It comes with two general physicians and 2 nurses.

He was with the team doctors have examined about 40 people who became ill flu and fever.

Hat-tip dbg. A little more on one of the fatal cases. I believe the bold text is saying that the individual had been ill for 2 years, possibly with uncontrolled diabetes ("dry sugar").

Re: Indonesia - 3 Deaths in Pangkajene Kepulauan Regency- Badi - Officials say Not Bird Flu

While it is possible that goat waste might be responsible for some of the illness, it is more likely just a commentary on the poor health situation there.

The Goat And The Behaviour Of The Life Were Unhealthy
Visited Pulau Badi, Pangkep
Wednesday, October 6 2010 | 08:54 of WITA

Visited Pulau Badi, wherever the eye could see there must be a goat. Outside the house, where then foot took a step must have the waste of the goat. Like that the condition that happened in the island that was followed 2.5 to three hours trip from Pangkep or 1.5 hours from the Makassar City.

Reported Tribun, on Monday (4/10) of hundreds of residents were sick in the island. His sign was similar to bird flu. Some time before three people died because of being sick.

They complained about the condition for the body of some last time. This complaint take the form of itchy, had a headache, flu, the cough, even hypertension.

A glance, saw the condition for the environment in the island that had a population of 820 head of household was indeed unhealthy. The pool of water, the scattered waste, and the floor and the wall of the dirty house were usual scenery.

The behaviour of the life was unclean and healthy other was parents, mature, and children who always were touching directly with the land and the dirty livestock animal. Appearance children were left playing with the dirty land, dirty clothes, and did not put on the footwear, as well as adult.

Children's posture for the length of observation of Tribun did not have any that was fat. There is also that his stomach was distended and all the time issued nasal mucus from his nose. Saw his face really pale, his hair was brownish and dried up.

Food that was eaten by the resident of appearance was also processed by means of that was unclean. There were those who cooked outside the house and now the livestock goat was in the food that was cooked.

The behaviour of the life that like that that it was suspected became the cause of the illness of hundreds of residents who were aggravated with the extreme weather. "They were sick possibly because of the weather and the unclean environment", the Health Pangkep Service headword Dr Indriaty Latief that passed by the visit to Pulau Badi and carried out mass medical treatment.
