      Ohio Updates Their H3N2v Numbers

      # 6482

Earlier we learned of a major increase in the number of confirmed H3N2v cases in the state of Indiana, and now we have an update from the Ohio Department of Health indicating a doubling (to 30) of confirmed cases since Monday.
The announcement appears on their Health Tips For Ohio Fairs webpage.
Health Tips for Ohio's Fair Season
The Ohio Department of Health (ODH) along with local health departments have identified several human cases of Influenza A variant H3N2 in Ohio. There are currently 30 cases of H3N2v statewide; all individuals had direct contact with swine at fairs and no human-to-human passage of the virus has been confirmed.
The case breakdown per county is as follows:
      • Butler: 16
      • Clark: 3
      • Gallia: 4
      • Greene: 4
      • Hamilton: 3

Those with confirmed cases of H3N2v are between the ages of 6 months and 36 years old. To date, one of the confirmed cases was hospitalized as a precaution, but they have since been treated and released.
      (Continue . . .)
As with the earlier announcement out of Indiana, there are more cases being tested, and these numbers are likely to climb.

        UPDATE 8/9/12 @ 6:45 p.m.
GALLIA COUNTY, Ohio (WSAZ) -- The Kanawha-Charleston Health Department today put out a bulletin to folks headed to county fairs around the region, aimed at keeping them from getting sick.

It all comes after an outbreak of the flu, transmitted from pigs to humans, at the Gallia County Junior Fair last week.

Health experts said there's really only one way to get this flu: being around pigs, and then eating, drinking or touching your face-- without washing your hands.

Since last week, 200 people have come down with flu-like symptoms in Gallia County.

Out of those, 69 have tested positive with a test at the doctors office
        .

This flu is mild for the most part, and is treated with Tamiflu.

In Gallia County, the threat is pretty much over.

Only two new suspected cases showed up Thursday, and since this flu is only passed from pigs to humans, Gallia County Health Commissioner Dr. Gerald Vallee says there likely won't be any more.

          County Fair Outreach Underway

As Additional Cases of Influenza A variant H3N2 are Identified

COLUMBUS ? Today the Ohio Department of Agriculture (ODA) and the Ohio Department of Health (ODH) announced the launch of an outreach plan to increase awareness of H3N2v at county fairs.

A representative from ODA and ODH, or a local designee such as the fair veterinarian or health commissioner, will visit every fair to make in-person contact with swine exhibitors and reinforce the importance of preventing the spread of flu.

As part of that outreach, ODA has set guidance for fair boards. Together, the agencies created an informational video for fairgoers and exhibitors: http://youtu.be/WBJsCcqscU0.

ODH has confirmed six additional cases of Influenza A variant H3N2 in Ohio.

There are currently 36 cases of H3N2v statewide.

At this time, surveillance indicates that the individuals most likely became ill with the flu virus after exposure to swine.

Health officials have not determined person to person transmission at this time, but continue to investigate the possibility.

With county fairs running into the first week of October in Ohio, ODA and ODH remind residents and visitors that fair attendance is safe.

Those attending the fair should remember:
          • Wash your hands frequently with soap and running water before and after exposure to animals.

The Cuyahoga County Fair, Aug. 6-12, took a ?proactive? approach by eliminating all swine from this year?s fair.

Tim Fowler, president of the fair board, said his staff felt it was safer not to have swine at the fair.

?Based on information that we had been receiving, we for this year eliminated or just canceled any swine exhibits or sales,? he said. ?We took this in cooperation not only with ourselves but the Cuyahoga County Board of Health,? he said, as well as information they had reviewed from the fair veterinarian...

CHILLICOTHE — Ross County, less than a week after the end of its county fair, has joined the list of counties with confirmed human cases of Influenza A H3N2v, also known as the swine flu.

The Ohio Department of Health on Tuesday had indicated the number of statewide human cases stood at 54, including one in Ross County. By late Wednesday, Kathy Wakefield, of the Ross County Health District, said two more suspected local cases came back positive, bringing the total of confirmed cases to three in Ross County. Updated statewide figures put the number at 68.

Two Montgomery County girls, ages 17 and 4, have been infected with an emerging flu strain contracted from swine.

Bill Wharton, spokesman for Public Health - Dayton & Montgomery County, said both girls had been in contact with pigs, one at the Butler County Fair and one at the Champaign County Fair. The girls are unrelated and live in different parts of the county, Wharton said.

The Ohio Department of Health reports 78 additional cases of H3N2v flu around the state this summer. The ill range from 6 months to 36 years old. Several have been hospitalized, but all have since been treated and released.
