The Ebola virus would have made 32 deaths

The outbreak of Ebola in the northeast of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), would have up to 32 deaths, according to a new survey released tuesday by the World Health Organization (WHO).

As of September 15, "a cumulative total of 72 cases (Ebola) were recorded of which 14 cases were confirmed positive after laboratory analysis, 32 cases were probable and 26 suspected cases and 32 deaths were registered," was learned from the WHO Kinshasa.

A premature baby born "in the isolation center Isiro (main focus of the epidemic) of a mother infected with Ebola virus was still alive while his mother died on Saturday," the source said.

In the DRC, which has experienced eight episodes of Ebola, it was the first time that a pregnant woman infected with the virus gave birth, because "Ebola and pregnancy are almost incompatible", stressed after the birth, the Minister of Health, the Dr. Felix Kabange Numbi.

According to the WHO, 23 health workers were among those infected, five died and 215 people who had contact with patients are under surveillance. She noted that the most recent case of Ebola was confirmed back to Friday.

I don't see any conflict between the two reports. Both reports give 14 confirmed, 32 probable, and 26 suspect cases, for a total of 72. Presumably, 19 of the confirmed/probable and 13 of the suspected cases have died.

The only difference is whether the suspected deaths are included in the fatality count.

Gregory responded and he says that they do not count the suspected cases or suspected deaths and therefore the correct number for deaths is 19.

A National Task Force convened by the MoH is working with partners including M?decins Sans Fronti?res (MSF), the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), US Agency for International Development (USAID), US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), United Nations Children?s Fund (UNICEF) and WHO, to control the outbreak.

WHO and the Global Outbreak Alert and Response Network (GOARN) are providing support by deploying experts to the field to work with partners in the areas of coordination, infection prevention and control (IPC), surveillance, epidemiology, public information and social mobilization, anthropological analysis and logistics for outbreak response.

With respect to this event, WHO does not recommend that any travel or trade restrictions be applied to the DRC.

          General information on Ebola subtypes

There are five identified subtypes of Ebola virus. The subtypes have been named after the location they have been first detected in Ebola outbreaks. Three subtypes of the five have been associated with large Ebola haemorrhagic fever (EHF) outbreaks in Africa. Ebola-Zaire, Ebola-Sudan and Ebola-Bundibugyo. EHF is a febrile haemorrhagic illness which causes death in 25-90% of all cases. The Ebola Reston species, found in the Philippines, can infect humans, but no illness or death in humans has been reported to date.

Hat-tip Pathfinder. Kisangani is a major city elsewhere in DRC, but with no contact history, there is no reason to think this case will be confirmed due to Ebola.

DRC: a suspected case of Ebola reported in Kisangani

A suspected case of Ebola was reported in Kisangani, capital of Orientale province (north-eastern DRC), located approximately 600 kilometers from the city of Isiro, considered the epicenter of disease, announced Tuesday the medical director of the general hospital Isiro Dr. Bwengadi

"There is a suspected case of a 16 year old girl who was recorded last Friday. It fevers and nose bleeds. Samples were made and sent to Isiro," continued Dr. Bwengadi, adding that analysis results will be announced on September 19.

According to Dr. Bwengadi, we can not yet confirm that there is the Ebola outbreak in Kisangani, but steps are being taken to prevent the spread of this disease.

According to the latest report, published on 13 September by Dr. Felix Kabange Numbi, DRC Minister of Health, the Ebola epidemic raging in the north-eastern DRC had 31 deaths since May 2012.

The Ministry of Health, the World Health Organization (WHO), the Center for Disease Control (CDC-Atlanta) and M?decins Sans Fronti?res (MSF) are working closely to fight against the disease.

The medical director of the general hospital of Makiso in Kisangani, called Tuesday, September 18 population quiet Friday after the discovery of a suspected case of Ebola fever hemorrhage. A teenager with a high fever with bleeding from the nose was taken to the hospital. Dr. Dieudonné Baengandi says that it is probably not a case of Ebola hemorrhagic fever. However, he called the people to respect the rules of protection against this disease.

According to the medical director, the sample taken from the young 16 year old girl was sent to a specialized laboratory in Isiro and the result is expected to arrive Wednesday, September 20.

According to Dr. Baengandi, this case seemed suspect because the patient had previously consumed meat bat.

"We thought, as we are in the context of an epidemic, it is better to isolate the hospital time to investigate and find out if this is a case of Ebola haemorrhagic fever," has he said.

The doctor says that the clinical, health status of the patient changes positively.

"We trust that this is probably not a case of Ebola hemorrhagic fever. Time to get results, we will confirm or not, "he said.

Dr. Dieudonné Baengandi then urged people to take precautions to avoid contracting the disease, among others, avoiding eating fresh meat of wild animals and greet hand.

According to a new survey released Tuesday by the World Health Organization (WHO), the Ebola outbreak was 32 dead, including a woman who had just given birth. Baby, by cons have survived, according to the same source.

Speaking to AFP, Dr. Léodégal Bazira, WHO Representative in Kinshasa, said that "the analysis of the situation today shows that the epidemic seems dammed in its epicenter and that Isiro there were more new infections among health personnel.

Ebola's Unlikely Victims: Health Care Workers

                by Richard Knox
                September 19, 2012

The Ebola virus continues to strike people in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Since May, the World Health Organization has counted 72 confirmed, probable or suspected cases and 32 deaths.

As usual, a disproportionate share of those cases are health care workers ? 23 of them, almost a third.

That's because, despite elaborate protective garb and other precautions, it's very hard for doctors, nurses and health aides to avoid virus-laden bodily fluids of Ebola patients or accidental needle sticks. That's especially true at the beginning of an outbreak, when Ebola symptoms might be mistaken for malaria or something else.
                ...
Apart from the tragedy of caregiver deaths, this has a ripple effect that helps keep an outbreak going.

Dr. Armand Sprecher of Doctors Without Borders says that's because when health workers don moon suits and avoid all unnecessary contact with Ebola victims, that reinforces the community perception that the hospital is just the place people go to die.

"If you don't hang IV lines and do things that look medical, if you just put people in beds and walk around in protective gear and don't touch anybody, well, why would they want to come there?" Sprecher said in an interview with Shots from the Doctors Without Borders operations center in Brussels.

The perception is only fueled when people see health care workers die of Ebola in hospitals.

"We have a horrible time marketing our treatment unit because patients are not seeing a benefit to come in when we don't produce a lot of survivors," Sprecher says.

And if infected people stay away from hospitals, that just allows the virus to spread out in the community.

But the grim truth is doctors can't do anything for Ebola patients except give them fluids and other supportive care. What's needed, Sprecher says, is an effective treatment.

The World Health Organization has confirmed 72 cases of the dreaded virus in the Democratic Republic of Congo since May; 23 of them are health care workers. Despite elaborate protective garb and other precautions, it's hard for doctors, nurses and health aides to avoid virus-laden bodily fluids of Ebola patients.

76 cases of fever "Ebola" with 32 deaths in Haut-Uele to September 19, 2012

76 cases of Ebola haemorrhagic fever, including 32 deaths, have been recorded since the beginning of the epidemic in May 2012 in the Haut-Uele district (Orientale Province - Eastern DRC) until 19 September, reported Wednesday in Kinshasa Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).
69 cases, including 31 deaths, were registered from 18 May to 11 September, specifically in the areas of health and Isiro Viodana located in the health district of Haut-Uele. Twenty health professionals also contracted the disease and five died so far. Isiro is the epicenter of the epidemic, while the city of Viodana, located 75 km southwest of Isiro is considered a secondary source. The International Coordinating Committee Technical and Scientific fight against this epidemic in the district was estimated recently, after compilation and analysis of data and retrospective September 13, that the epidemic had started in May 2012. More than half of the reported cases occurred before the official declaration of the epidemic on 17 August. The World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Fund for Children (UNICEF) received $ 1.75 million to strengthen the fight against this epidemic.
According to OCHA, the Pooled Fund with a contribution of U.S. $ 1 million to the fund, provided 50% of the fundraising worth $ 2 million jointly launched by WHO and UNICEF earlier this month. The other 750,000 dollars have been granted by the Central Fund for Emergency Response Fund (CERF). The project of all these international structures to strengthen this struggle, about 700,000 beneficiaries and target is to support the efforts of the Government of the DRC to reduce mortality from the epidemic. This full support several components, including active case search, communication and social mobilization, psychosocial care and logistical support.
OCHA said that UNICEF, which deals with three aspects, has already started some activities in this framework since September 10.

Ebola Hemorrhagic Fever Outbreak in Democratic Republic of Congo (Updated September 24, 2012)

According to the DRC Ministry of Health report on September 17, 2012, a total of 18 confirmed cases (7 of them fatal), all from the Isiro area in DRC's Province Orientale, were reported. The case count also includes 32 probable and 32 suspect cases, with 26 deaths in these 2 categories. CDC teams are presently on the ground in DRC to assist the Ministry of Health in the epidemiologic and diagnostic aspects of the investigation. Laboratory support is provided both through CDC's field laboratory in Isiro, and through the CDC/UVRI lab in Uganda. The outbreak in DRC is not linked epidemiologically to the recently-ended Ebola outbreak in the Kibaale district of Uganda.

Ebola outbreak in Democratic Republic of Congo ? update

                        27 September 2012

As of 24 September 2012, 51 cases (19 laboratory confirmed, 32 probable) with Ebola haemorrhagic fever (EHF) have been reported in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Of these, 20 have been fatal (7 confirmed, 13 probable).

The cases reported are from Isiro and Viadana health zones in Haut-U?l? district in Province Orientale. To date, 28 suspected cases have been reported and are being investigated.

The Ministry of Health (MoH) continues to work with partners, under the National Task Force: which includes WHO, M?decins Sans Fronti?res (MSF); the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC); US Agency for International Development (USAID); US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and United Nations Children?s Fund (UNICEF); to identify all possible chains of transmission of the illness and ensure that appropriate measures are taken to interrupt transmission and stop the outbreak.

Response operations continue in the areas of: coordination; Infection Prevention and Control (IPC); surveillance and epidemiology; case management; public information and social mobilization; psycho social support; anthropological analysis; and logistics. Current activities include: training for health managers and heads of clinic services to strengthen surveillance; outreach to schools through principals, teachers and students; psychosocial support to affected families, particularly in Isiro and surrounding areas, where the latest cases are being detected, and to health care workers; training of social workers who are providing support in the Ebola treatment rooms; and interpersonal communication skills training for front-line staff. Local community-based radio have also broadcast programmes to provide information and address the concerns of the local populations.

WHO and the Global Outbreak Alert and Response Network (GOARN) have deployed experts to support operational response. Technical support has been further strengthened with an infection prevention and control expert to assist in preventing disease transmission in health care and community settings.

With respect to this event. WHO does not recommend any travel or trade restrictions to be applied to the DRC.

General information on controlling infection of EHF in health-care settings

Human-to-human transmission of the Ebola virus is primarily associated with direct contact with blood and body fluids.

Transmission to healthcare workers has been reported when appropriate infection control measures have not been observed.
Health-care workers caring for patients with suspected or confirmed Ebola virus need to apply infection control measures to avoid any exposure to the patient?s blood and body fluids and/or direct unprotected contact with the possibly contaminated environment.

It is important that Standard Precautions, particularly hand hygiene, the use of gloves and other personal protective equipment, safe injections practices and other measures are applied to all patients in all health care settings.

WINNIPEG - A group of antiviral specialists will soon be en route to the Democratic Republic of Congo to help combat a deadly Ebola outbreak, the Public Health Agency of Canada said Friday.

A team of three scientists from the Winnipeg-based National Microbiology Laboratory will be dispatched to the impoverished African country, which has been grappling with the dangerous virus since May.

The World Health Organization said at least 20 people have died from the virus, which was officially declared an outbreak on Aug. 17. At least 51 cases have been identified so far, it added.

Ebola claims more lives in DRC
                            ------------------------------
An outbreak of Ebola virus disease in the Democratic Republic of Congo [DRC] may have killed up to 33 people, while the number of suspected cases has risen, the health ministry said on Thursday [27 Sep 2012]. A total of 79 cases have been recorded, including 19 confirmed positive after laboratory analysis, 32 probable cases and 28 suspected cases, while 33 deaths were registered by 25 Sep 2012, the Ministry announced. 17 of the deaths were confirmed to be caused by Ebola virus infection.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) said that the fatality rate was almost 42 percent. The WHO added that a baby born prematurely in the isolation centre in Isiro -- the epicentre of the epidemic in northeastern DRC -- to a mother infected by Ebola virus had died on Thursday, the statement said. In DRC, it was the 1st time a pregnant Ebola disease patient had given birth, because "Ebola disease and pregnancy are almost incompatible," Health Minister Felix Kabange Numbi said after the baby was born.

To date, there is no treatment nor vaccine for Ebola disease, which kills between 25 percent and 90 percent of patients depending on the strain of the virus. There have been 8 outbreaks in the DRC. The disease is transmitted by direct contact with blood, faeces and sweat, by sexual contact and by unprotected handling of contaminated corpses.

Currently, 167 people who have been in contact with the 79 reported cases are under surveillance. "We need to manage to follow all the contacts closely and regularly and to that end, we need to strengthen awareness among the population," Benoit Kebela, the head of the health ministry's unit to fight infectious diseases told Agence France-Presse. Among the 79 reported cases, 24 concern health workers.

"We are in control of the situation, because we were able to make efforts in hospital measures -- we have protective equipment," added Dr Kebela, who was on a mission to Isiro. An epidemic was declared in mid-August in Orientale province, but the international committee for the fight against Ebola has carried out research and dated the outbreak back to May [2012]. The ministry of health, the WHO, the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta, Georgia, and Doctors Without Borders (MSF - Medecins Sans Frontieres) are working in close collaboration to combat the outbreak.

(Winnipeg, Manitoba) – At the request of the World Health Organization, the Public Health Agency of Canada is deploying its mobile laboratory to help respond to an outbreak of Ebola in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The Honourable Leona Aglukkaq, Minister of Health, today commended the Agency’s humanitarian efforts.

“Our Government is committed to supporting global public health,” said Minister Aglukkaq. “As leaders in this field, we are pleased to assist our international partners in responding to this deadly outbreak to help save lives.”

the Congo. The equipment is essential for the
rapid identification of the Ebola virus.

Agency scientists from the National Microbiology Laboratory in Winnipeg will set up its mobile lab in the affected region to provide rapid diagnostic testing, which is pivotal in responding effectively to the outbreak. On-site lab tests that can produce results in only a few hours allow for faster isolation of Ebola cases and better treatment for all patients. This reduces the risk of people who are infected from spreading the virus to others, which saves lives and helps contain the outbreak.

“This is a very serious situation and the Agency is proud to assist in the response,” said Dr. Frank Plummer, Scientific Director General of the National Microbiology Laboratory. “It’s very important that the international community come together to help control an outbreak of this nature, both for humanitarian reasons and to protect the health of all global citizens.”

The team is being led by Dr. Gary Kobinger, who has built a strong global presence with his research into Ebola and other viral haemorrhagic fevers. Recently, Dr. Kobinger and his team have received international recognition for the ground-breaking development of an Ebola treatment and vaccine. The Agency’s team also has extensive field experience from previous outbreaks around the world including in similar locations. They have developed an extremely agile and adaptable portable lab system that enables it to travel into the most remote and isolated regions and operate under difficult circumstances.

Ebola virus is a highly contagious illness that causes death in 25 to 90 percent of all cases. Early symptoms of the disease are similar to non-life threatening illnesses such as Malaria, which is why early detection is critical to outbreak response.

The National Microbiology Laboratory is Canada’s leading public health infectious disease laboratory and the only facility in Canada that is permitted to study and work with live fever viruses such as Ebola and other similarly highly infectious and deadly organisms.

"Safety and security don't just happen, they are the result of collective consensus and public investment. We owe our children, the most vulnerable citizens in our society, a life free of violence and fear."

KINSHASA, Oct 01, 2012 (AFP) - An outbreak of Ebola fever in the Democratic Republic of Congo may have killed up to 36 people, out of 81 suspected cases, according to a new death toll released by the health ministry on Monday.

The ministry said that 20 confirmed cases have been recorded, as well as 32 likely and 29 suspected as of September 29.

They said that among the 36 deaths, 10 were confirmed to have been a direct result of the killer virus.

They also said that the number of people under observation had risen to 216 since the outbreak was first reported in mid-August in the eastern Orientale province.
