The World Health Organisation has said that Nigeria has the highest number of poliomyelitis cases in the world.

WHO's Country Representative in Nigeria, Dr. David Okello, announced this in Lagos at the installation ceremony of the new District Governor of Rotary International District 9110, Dr. Kamoru Omotosho, which occurred yesterday.

Okello, noted that Nigeria was ranked alongside two other countries, Pakistan and Afghanistan, who are both still grappling with the problem.

Nigeria: 48 Cases of Polio Recorded in Niger, Others in 2012

A total of 48 cases of Wild Polio Virus (WPV) have been recorded in 10 States since the beginning of the year 2012 with Kano, Jigawa, Bauchi, Borno, Yobe, Sokoto, Zamfara, Kaduna, Katsina and Niger as the affected States.

Nigeria doubtful to meet 2012 deadline for Polio eradication

The Global Polio Eradication (GPEI), led by the World Health Organisation (WHO), Rotary International, US Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF), was launched in 1988 when the World Health Assembly adopted a resolution to eradicate the Wild Polio Virus (WPV).

Only last week, two new cases were reported-WPV1 from Jigawa and Yobe states, bringing the total number of cases for 2012 to 57 as against 62 cases recorded in 2011. The most recent case was the newly reported case from Jigawa state with onset of paralysis on 25 June 2012.

NIGERIA has continued to transmit the Wild Polio Virus (WPV) with eight new cases recorded last week bringing the total number for 2012 to 70.

According to the latest edition of Weekly Polio Update published by the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI), ?eight new cases were reported in the past week, seven type one polio virus (WPV1s) from Kaduna, Kano, and Katsina and a type three (WPV3) from Taraba, bringing the total number of cases for 2012 to 70. The most recent was the newly reported case from Kaduna with onset of paralysis on July 23...

Two new cases were reported in the past week (both WPV1s from Katsina), bringing the total number of cases for 2012 to 72.
The most recent case had onset of paralysis on 23 July (WPV1 from Kaduna).
The next Immunization Plus Days (IPDs) have been postponed by one week, and will now be held from 23-26 September.
Planning is focusing on further sensitizing microplans; scaling up geographic information systems (GIS) technology to more
accurately monitor vaccination team movements against pre-prepared microplans; further engaging traditional leaders; further
integrating the new staff capacity which has been built up over the past months; and, targeting activities including to reach
Nomadic populations in 40 Local Government Areas (LGAs) in ten states.
The strategic recommendations by surveillance medical officers (SMOs) from India who had recently observed activities in
Nigeria are being fully integrated into preparations for the next IPDs.
In response to the recently-detected WPV3 case in Taraba (onset of paralysis on 5 July), a mop-up is being conducted this
weekend in four wards in the vicinity of the affected area. This will be followed by a state-wide response over the coming
weeks.
His Excellency the Governor of Taraba has pledged his full support for response activities
Northern Nigeria is now the global epicentre of WPV3 transmission. Of 17 WPV3 cases reported this year, 15 are from northern
Nigeria.
Insecurity remains a challenge in parts of the country, notably in Borno and Yobe states, particularly in the capital cities of both
of these states. Reviews of microplans have been postponed in the capital cities due to the insecurity situation. An assessment
of the impact of the situation on polio activities is ongoing.
Given the recent increase in cases in Katsina state (14 cases this year, 8 of which since May), the possibility of conducting
immunization campaigns across the border in Niger is being explored, to minimize the risk and consequences of polio spread
from Katsina. Niger will participate in planned, multi-country immunization campaigns in October and November (see ?West
Africa? section below for more), but limited activities in border areas, possibly in conjunction with the September IPDs in Nigeria,
would further mitigate risk.

Govt begins immunisation in 11 states Sept 23

WITH five new cases of the Wild Polio Virus (WPV) reported last week, the number of confirmed outbreak in the country between January and August 2012 has hit 77.

As part of efforts to address the issue, stakeholders led by the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) and the Presidential Taskforce on Polio Eradication plan a new Tsangaya (Koranic) School strategy to be piloted in 10 high-risk councils of Jigawa and Zamfara in early September, to help reduce the number of missed children during polio campaigns and build community engagement.

The stakeholders, which also include the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the United Nations Children?s Fund (UNICEF) have started preparations for the next Immunisation Plus Days (IPDs) on September23 to 26, in 11 states in the north of the country...

IF nothing is done urgently Katsina State, which accounts for 40 per cent of Nigeria?s Wild Polio Virus type one (WPV1), may export the virus to neighbouring countries, even as the country last week reported four new cases of polio.

According to the latest edition of Weekly Polio Update published yesterday by the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI), four new cases were reported in the past week. Two of the WPV1s is from Kano while two WPV1s is from Jigawa, bringing the total number of cases for 2012 to 88. The most recent case, a WPV1 from Jigawa, had onset of paralysis on August 20.

Additionally, two new cases of circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus type 2 (cVDPV2) were reported from Kano State, the most recent of which had onset of paralysis on August 1.

According to the GPEI, Nigeria remains the only country in the world with ongoing circulation of all three serotypes: WPV1, WPV3 and cVDPV2.

Katsina state leads in polio cases

Katsina state, in Nigeria?s Northwest has the nation?s highest number of polio cases, Dr Mustapha Mahmud, Head of the Immunisation Unit of the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), has said.

Two years after the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) recorded its last case of wild polio virus in Dobi village, Gwagwalada Area Council, a new case of the virus and another suspected case was yesterday recorded in Jahi village, a community in the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC).

The executive secretary, FCT Primary Health Care Development Board, Dr. Rilwanu Mohammed, disclosed this during the monitoring of a mop-up polio immunisation exercise in the area.

He said a case of weakness of limbs in a child of two years and six months, Yusuf Haruna, was reported to the board, and that during investigation in the area, similar symptoms were noticed in another child, prompting the authorities to send faecal samples from the suspected cases to Ibadan for test...
