Dengue statistics are just the tip of the iceberg in Bangalore
    Published: Sunday, Nov 11, 2012, 11:40 IST
By Soumita Majumdar | Place: Bangalore | Agency: DNA

The BBMP?s record shows 961 confirmed cases of dengue this year, and in November alone the city accounted for 130 cases, revealing a sharp rise.

The actual number of cases in the city, however, may be larger by a factor of 10, because the BBMP figure only pertains to cases where samples were sent to the National Institute of Virology (NIV) for confirmation. It?s an open secret that many private hospitals treat patients with dengue-like symptoms without NIV testing.

MADURAI: Dengue scare reached its peak in Madurai district after six people, including three boys from Melur taluk, succumbing allegedly due to the dreaded disease on Sunday alone. All the victims were undergoing treatment at various hospitals in the district.

However, health officials immediately got into denial mode and said that only one among them had tested positive for dengue, while the others died of various other reasons. In Melur region alone, five deaths were reported in a single day on Sunday, while one woman from Paravai also died due to suspected dengue at a hospital. Villagers of Chinnakarampatti staged a protest with the dead body of a man alleging lack of adequate treatment. The villagers claimed that 39 people have perished due to dengue from Melur area, though the number was disputed by health officials.
