Meerut has seen at least 9 fatalities to date in 2013, some of whom have died in Delhi hospitals. In general, though, patients originating outside Delhi are not added to the Delhi total. - Ro

Delhi Registers 1000 H1N1 Cases; Rajasthan Worst Hit with 112 Deaths

India's national capital hit another shocking record, after more than 1,000 people were confirmed positive for the H1N1 virus in the past two months, reported Daily Bhaskar.

Twelve deaths have been reported from Delhi in the short period.

Surprisingly, Delhi Chief Minister Sheila dixit remains unfazed. She feels that the city's hospitals and health facilities are competent to handle emergency situations relating to the fatal virus.

While there have been reports of a patient's relative calling about 25 hospitals to get a ventilator, the state government claims that the ventilator facility is well provided by the city's hospitals.

The uncharacteristic winter along with rains this season is believed to have set off the H1N1 outbreak not only in Delhi-NCR areas but also in other parts of the country.

According to health ministry data, 275 people have succumbed to the flu between 1 January and 27 February. In Gujarat, the flu claimed 58 lives and 312 cases were reported. In Haryana, out 317 cases 38 people died, while Punjab registered 150 cases with 32 deaths this year.

With 586 swine flu cases, Rajasthan closely follows Delhi in second place but has the highest number of deaths at 112 deaths.

India witnessed the highest swine flu deaths in 2009, when 980 people died and more than 27,000 people tested positive for the deadly virus.
