China confirms new human bird flu case
    (AFP)

    28 February 2007

HONG KONG - China on Wednesday confirmed a human case of bird flu, the country?s first for seven weeks, the Hong Kong government?s media service reported.

The patient is a 44-year-old female farmer from Fujian province who developed fever and coughing 10 days ago, a spokesman for China?s Department of Health was quoted by Hong Kong?s Government Information Service (GIS) as saying.
Laboratory tests on the patient by the China Centre for Disease Control and Prevention yielded a positive result for the H5N1 strain of bird flu, GIS reported the spokesman saying.
The latest case brings to 23 the number of people in China who have contracted the H5N1 strain since it emerged in Asia in late 2003 and spread globally.
Bird flu has killed more than 167 people worldwide since then and fears remain that it could trigger a deadly, global pandemic if a strain evolves that transmits easily from human to human.

Fujian on high alert after human case of bird flu confirmed

FUZHOU, March 1 (Xinhua) -- Local markets for live fowls and processed fowl products have been suspended of trading since a new case of human infection of the deadly H5N1 strain of bird flu virus was found in Jian'ou, a city in east China's Fujian Province, late last month.

Local health authorities early on Thursday informed the public of the confirmation of the case.

In an interview with Xinhua on Thursday, an official from Jian'ou, a county-level city under jurisdiction of Nanping City, admitted that a five-level reporting network, from the levels of the village through to the province, had been put into operation around the clock.

"With the network in place, which is led by Vice Governor Zhang Changping and more leaders of governments at lower levels, information of any new infections can be reported in time so that actions can be taken accordingly to prevent a possible outbreak," said the official, who asked not to be identified.

Information from the provincial health bureau said that a 44-year-old farmer surnamed Li in Jian'ou city in the province was infected with bird flu virus lethal strain H5N1.

Li developed symptoms including fever and pneumonia on Feb. 18.

Later lab work by the provincial disease control and prevention center showed that the patient has been infected with bird flu virus strain H5N1 and the test result was confirmed by the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention on Feb. 27.

On the same day, senior officials of the province held a special meeting to adopt measures to prevent a possible outbreak of the disease.

At the meeting, Vice Governor Zhang Changping, who is appointed as commander-in-chief of Fujian Provincial Headquarters for Prevention and Control of Major Animal and Plant Diseases, ordered compulsory inoculation on all fowls, and required local authorities to set up inoculation files and issue certificates to inoculated animals.

Zhang told the health, stock-raising and forestry authorities at all levels to be on high alert and closely monitor the situation.

Zhang also asked local workers to quarantine and check animals at every stage -- farms, slaughter houses and the market. Those who failed should be punished accordingly, said Zhang.

Li, the patient who was confirmed to have made contact with dead fowls, has been receiving treatment at the local hospital. She is said to be in critical condition.

Local health authorities said they are closely monitoring those who had had close contact with Li. So far, they showed no symptoms of the highly pathogenic avian disease.

Li is the country's first human case of bird flu in about seven weeks since China reported on Jan. 10 that a 37-year-old farmer in east China's Anhui Province had contracted bird flu but had recovered.

The virus has killed 14 people in China since 2003.

According to Fujian health authorities, China's Health Ministry has conveyed the information to the World Health Organization, and health agencies of the regions of Hong Kong and Macao and Taiwan Province, and some other countries

Woman patient infected with deadly bird flu virus in stable condition

JIAN'OU, Fujian, March 2 (Xinhua) -- A woman farmer who was confirmed on Tuesday to be infected with the deadly H5N1 strain of bird flu is in a critical but stable condition in hospital.

The poor 44-year-old woman, identified by her surname as Li, is receiving medical treatment in Jian'ou City Hospital, said Xu Longshan, chief of the Fujian Provincial Professional Panel for Prevention and Control of Human Infection of Bird Flu, on Friday.

Li is a native of Damiao Village, a marketplace in the mountainous township of Xiaosong. Bird flu patient still in critical condition

Bird flu patient still in critical condition: spokesman

A farmer who was confirmed on Tuesday to be infected with the deadly H5N1 strain of bird flu is still in a critical condition in hospital.

The 44-year-old woman, surnamed Li, is receiving medical treatment in Jian'ou City Hospital, said Xu Longshan, spokesman and chief of the Fujian Provincial Professional Panel for Prevention and Control of Human Infection of Bird Flu, on Friday.

According to Xu, the patient was found with inflammation on her left lung when she came to the hospital on Feb. 24, but her pneumonia symptoms developed quickly and she went into a coma the next day. A chest X-ray on Feb. 25 shows large shadows on her lungs.

As of Thursday evening, Li's body temperature and pulse had returned to normal, and her lungs and breathing appeared to be functioning better but she was still breathing with the help of a respirator, Xu said.

Doctors say Li is still in a critical condition and they are trying to boost her immunity to prevent further organic infection.

Over ten doctors and medical experts from local hospitals, and Beijing-based Chaoyang hospital and Ditan Hospital are trying to work out a detailed treatment plan to save Li, said Xu Yongxi, head of the hospital.

Policemen and hospital staff have been seen guarding the ward where the patient is staying and doctors are wearing thick, disinfected suits.

The patient's husband is with her in the hospital, and her 13-year-old son, who now stays in her four-storey house with his grand-mother, looked saddened, and said he hoped his mother could recover soon.

Li is the country's first human case of bird flu in seven weeks since China reported on Jan. 10 that a 37-year-old farmer in east China's Anhui Province had contracted bird flu last December but had recovered.

Li is a native of Damiao Village, a marketplace in the mountainous township of Xiaosong. The farmer, who kept five chickens at her home, developed symptoms including fever on Feb. 18. She had visited village clinics and township hospitals before being hospitalized on Feb. 24 in the Jian'ou City hospital.

She was confirmed to be infected with the virus by the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention on Feb. 27.

Li is known to have eaten two chickens she had raised, but her husband and son, who also ate the chicken, have not developed bird flu.

Xu said Li had been sick with chronic tracheitis and had a poorly-functioning lung before being struck down with bird flu. "The onset of bird flu symptoms may have been related to her low immunity," he said.

Xu said there are many wild fowls in the Damiao village, and the bird flu virus may have been passed by wild fowls to livestocks and then to the patient, or through direct contact with manure, excretion or feathers of wild fowls. Further research is needed to decide the source of the virus, he said.

The State Ministry of Agriculture has sent special teams to work with local veterinarian authorities to trace the source of infection, ensure close monitoring of the epidemic, publicize bird flu prevention knowledge to local farmers.

All live poultry in Damiao Village and areas within a three-square-kilometer radius have been culled.

Yang Weizhong, Party secretary of the Xiaosong township, said they had set up watercourses in the village to store disinfectants and the village was immediately disinfected after Li was diagnosed with bird flu.

Local markets for live fowls and processed fowl products in Damiao and its adjacent regions have been closed until further notice.

Local health authorities said they were tightly monitoring 11 people, including Li's families and friends who had had close contacts with her, as well as another 100 who had general contacts with the woman.

So far, they have shown no symptoms of the disease, authorities said.

The provincial health department has sent several medical workers to help local bird flu prevention work, and it has ordered prompt reporting of fever patients in Jian'ou city.

Local health authorities have examined 87 patients with fever but have found no bird flu symptoms among the people.

But new information from the Ministry of Agriculture has found no bird flu virus in the avian samples collected from Damiao Village and the adjacent areas so far.

The specialists concluded that there was a slight possibility of infection being spread by wild fowls.

All of the samples have been sent to the China National Bird Flu Reference Lab, based in Harbin, capital of northeast China's Heilongjiang Province, for further tests.

Specialists and officials from the Ministry of Agriculture are taking a slate of measures to curb infection in the area including expanding disinfecting and monitoring areas.

The virus has killed 14 people in China since 2003.

Farmer cured of bird flu donates serum for treatment of new human infection

The farmer from East China's Anhui Province, who contracted the deadly H5N1 strain of bird flu last December but was later cured of the avian disease, was called in to donate his serum for treatment of another rural Chinese woman who was confirmed last month to have been infected of the same virus.

Xu Longshan, spokesman and chief of the Fujian Provincial Professional Panel for Prevention and Control of Human Infection of Bird Flu, told Xinhua Saturday health workers from Anhui Province Thursday escorted the farmer, identified by his surname as Li, to Fuzhou, capital of Fujian Province, where experts from the blood center affiliated to the Fujian Provincial Bureau of Health got serum from him the second day.

                    Li has returned back home.

"The serum was brought to Jian'ou on the same day, and so far, medical workers have carried out the first round of injection on the woman who was just confirmed of being infected of the lethal strain of the avian disease," said Xu.

"The method is new but is for sure to be of some effect in improving the woman's capability of fighting against new rounds of infection," said Xu, who admitted it would take some time before the woman could develop immunity of her own against the avian disease.

The farmer from Jian'ou of southeast China's Fujian Province who contracted the bird flu late last month remains in critical condition but is not worsening, according to local sources.

The 44-year-old woman, surnamed Li, is being treated at the Jian'ou City Hospital. A team of medical specialist have been going all out to save her life, said Yu Jian, mayor of Jian'ou, a county-level city in northeastern Fujian.

He was speaking to a panel of experts from international organizations attending a forum held here on Monday.

Panel members include Dr. Chin-Kei Lee, the representative of World Health Organization (WHO) to China, Xu Zhen, the coordinator to WHO's representative to China, and Guo Fusheng, the representative of Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) of the United Nations to China.

The specialists visited Li's home, inspected the poultry shed where she raised the chickens and interviewed villagers.

"Li ate the infected chickens, but I think the infection was likely contracted during the slaughter and handling of the dead chickens, not by consumption," said Dr. Chin-Kei Lee.

Li had eaten two chickens she had raised, but her husband and son, who also ate the chicken, have not fallen ill.

There have been no reports of a large number dead birds in the village.

"There is no need to panic," said Lee, who also urged more to be done to raise public awareness of the causes of bird flu.

Li is the country's first human case of bird flu since China reported on Jan. 10 that a 37-year-old farmer in east China's Anhui Province had contracted bird flu in December. He has since recovered.

Li is a native of Damiao Village, a market town in the mountainous township of Xiaosong. The woman farmer, who kept only five chickens at her home, developed symptoms of fever on Feb. 18. She visited village clinics and township hospitals before being hospitalized on Feb. 24 in the Jian'ou City hospital. The Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed the case on Feb. 27.

Specialists and officials from the Ministry of Agriculture are taking a number of measures to prevent further infection in the area including expanding disinfecting and monitoring areas.

The bird flu virus has killed 14 people in China since 2003.
