Re: EGYPT - March 14, 2007+ - News on sus cases

6 new sus cases -- 4 in Ash Sharqiyah and 2 in Dakalia. One from Dakalia -- Enam Ramadan -- may possibly be related to Mohamed "54 years" reported yesterday -- same "last name" and from the same village:

Very interesting Dr. Niman. Maybe this more mild form is what is happening in Indonesia. Oh, sorry, I just remembered they are all negative..... Thanks for the commentary.

NAMRU-3 is doing a good job of collecting samples and generating sequences, so the genetic picture is coming into focus.

State news agency MENA quoted a health ministry spokesman as saying the girl, Amira Abdel Latif Nayel, had been admitted to a hospital in Aswan, 450 km south of Cairo, on Tuesday suffering from fever and muscle pains.

He noted that the incidence of human cases of avian influenza had been No. 24 of the child Mohammed Mahmoud Ibrahim Dakahlia governorate, who received hospital treatment Manshiet Bakry has improved his condition and was recovering and is expected to leave tomorrow.

The above comments and translation describe the current status of the 24th and 25th confirmed cases in Egypt. The most recent case is from southern Egypt, and is the first case from the south this season. The 24th case is the third case in a row that has recovered from an H5N1 infection. These three cases (5F, 4F, 4M) were from the Nile Delta and had relatively mild cases. Prior to these three cases, the seven cases from this season were fatal. H5N1 had been isolated from six of the cases, and four had M230I. In contrast, the three recent milder cases did not have M230I.

M230I has been widely detected in poultry in Egypt, although the positives have been in the northern portion of the country. The relationship between the sequences in the north and south will be of interest.

The other difference between the 7 fatal cases and these 3 milder cases is, obviously, their ages -- all the 7 others who died were adults. Could this be an indicator of ... anything?

There are many variables, including time between symptoms and treatment, but the sequences really are starting to segregate out.

More will be presented in two weeks in California

                  Cool!

Can we get Dr. Boynton to post some of his finding here (please -- Dr. Boynton?):

Bruce Boynton, M.D. Naval Medical Research Unit #3
Avian Influenza in Egypt: A View from the Trenches

Dr. Boynton will provide an "on the ground" look at the introduction and movement of H5N1 in Egypt. He will shed light on the more personal aspects of how this epidemic has impacted medical practice, economics, society & politics.

I just asked Dr. Niman if he could ask Dr. Boynton where they get their news from. The authorities? Hospitals?

I believe the local media get news from the hospitals.

There are our boots on the ground....Dr. Boynton.

I hope we will get a good summary of both Dr. Niman's and Dr. Boynton's remarks. After listening to the BBC report, I can only imagine the apprehension that exists in Egypt right now.

                        Bio of Dr. Boynton:
