Indonesian woman dies of bird flu -health ministry

    Mon 7 May 2007, 8:10 GMT

JAKARTA, May 7 (Reuters) - An Indonesian woman from Sumatra has died from bird flu, a health ministry official said on Monday, taking the country's human death toll to 75.
Joko Suyono said by telephone the H5N1 virus had been confirmed after two laboratory tests on samples from the victim.
The woman, 29, who was from Pekanbaru in Riau province on Sumatra island, was hospitalised in Medan on May 1 after suffering from fever and respiratory problems and died two days later, another health ministry official, Suharda Ningrum, said.
"There were no fowl in her neighbourhood in Pekanbaru, however officials are conducting a thorough investigation," she said.
Most humans who contract bird have had contact with infected fowl.
The virus is endemic among fowl in many parts of Indonesia, where millions of people keep a few chickens or other domesticated birds in their yards.
Although avian flu still mainly affects birds, experts fear if it mutates into a form easily transmitted from person to person, it could sweep the world, killing millions.
Indonesia has by far the highest human death toll from the disease.

      Unclear how victim contracted virus
      May 07 2007 at 02:18PM

Jakarta - Bird flu has killed a woman in Indonesia, taking the death toll in the country worst hit by the deadly virus to 75, a health ministry official said on Monday.

Two series of tests confirmed that the 29-year-old woman was infected with the deadly H5N1 strain of the virus, said Suhardaningrum, from the national bird flu information centre.

The woman was admitted to the International Hospital in Medan in northern Sumatra on May 1 and died two days later, the official said.

"There is a new bird flu victim and it is a woman, the 75th person to die," said Suhardaningrum.

It was unclear how the woman contracted the virus as she did not have any known contact with sick poultry, the most common form of infection, other officials said.

The latest death comes as Indonesia is embroiled in a dispute with the World Health Organisation (WHO) over delays on resuming sharing bird flu samples with the United Nations body.

Indonesia agreed in March to an immediate resumption, after reaching a breakthrough agreement in international talks with the WHO to develop a new mechanism on sample-sharing.

But more than four weeks later, samples have not been sent.

Health Minister Siti Fadilah Supari has said Indonesia would not resume sharing samples aimed at fighting the deadly disease until it receives certain guarantees in writing.

Indonesia stopped sending samples, aimed at fighting the deadly disease, in December over concerns that drug firms would use them to develop costly vaccines beyond poorer countries' budgets.

Indonesia wants in writing a guarantee that firms will need permission from a country for access to its virus samples under the March agreement.

The Indonesian government had hoped to eradicate human infections this year.

In their drive to curb the spread of the virus, authorities in the capital Jakarta, one of the worst hit areas, have banned the popular practice of keeping chickens in backyards.

The WHO says the deadly H5N1 strain of bird flu has infected at least 282 people and killed around 170 of them, mostly in Southeast Asia, since the end of 2003.

Scientists worry the virus could mutate into a form easily spread among humans, leading to a global pandemic with the potential to kill millions.

The fear stems from the lessons of past influenza pandemics. A flu pandemic in 1918, just after the end of World War 1, killed 20 million people worldwide.

        Bird flu spreads to Riau

Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The Bird flu virus that has attacked 10 provinces in Indonesia proves to have also spread to the province of Riau in Sumatra, according to the health ministry`s public communications center here on Monday.

In a statement received by ANTARA News, Riau had become the 11th province in the country affected by the disease after a man in the province died of the virus on May 3.

Based upon the result of laboratory tests carried out by the health ministry`s development and research agency, the man known by his initial as A (29), was found positive with the virus.

The Eijkman Molecular Biology Institute here had confirmed the result of the test.

A who worked as a trader showed bird flu symptoms on April 25 and was taken to a hospital in Pekanbaru on April 27.

On May 1 he was transferred to Gleneagles Hospital in Medan, North Sumatra, but at 11.30pm on May 3 he died.

A team from the health ministry will come to A`s residence to conduct an epidemiological study.

The health service in Riau has already conducted a preliminary investigation but had found no conclusive proof on factors that had helped in spreading the virus to the region.

So far 95 people in the country have been infected by the H5N1 virus and 75 have died of it.(*)

Indonesian woman dies of bird flu

Jakarta (ANTARA News) - A 29-year-old woman from Sumatra island has died from bird flu, taking the country's human death toll from the disease to 75, a Health Ministry official said Monday.

Joko Suyono of the ministry's bird flu information center told Kyodo News that the H5N1 strain of the virus was confirmed in samples taken from the woman.

The woman was hospitalized in Medan, the capital of North Sumatra Province, on Tuesday after suffering from fever and respiratory problems and died two days later, he said.

Suyono said a team of investigators from Jakarta has been sent to Medan and the woman's hometown of Pekanbaru, where she reportedly fell ill on April 25.

"We still don't know from where she contacted the virus," Suyono said.

Most human bird flu cases in Asia have been traced to contact with infected fowl.

According to the World Health Organization, bird flu has killed at least 172 people out of 291 cases throughout the world since its emergence in 2003.

The Indo word that toggletext is translating as 'trader' can also mean: merchant, businessman, dealer. [http://www.kamus-online.com/]

Given that she lived in the city in a building complex with lots of businesses (including banks, from what I can tell) AND was sent to the International [Gleneagles] Hospital in Medan (private hospital) and not the usual RS Adam Malik (Adam the Owner), I'm thinking she's not a local villager selling chickens in the market, but perhaps a middle-class business-woman of some sort. Maybe this is why they're really wondering how she caught H5N1...?

Edit: The Indo word is 'pedagang'.
