    Week 40:
    ? In Washington during weeks 37-40, influenza activity was very low and only rare, sporadic infections were detected.
    ? The proportion of outpatient and emergency room visits for influenza-like illness (ILI) was very low.
    ? No laboratory-confirmed influenza deaths were reported to the Washington State Department of Health (DOH) during week 40.
    ? During week 40 (10/2/11?10/8/11), 2 specimens tested by the World Health Organization/National Respiratory and Enteric Virus Surveillance System (WHO/NREVSS) collaborating laboratories in Washington were positive for influenza (1 influenza A (H2N2) and 1 influenza B).

      To date for the 2011-12 influenza season, one influenza A (H3N2) isolate from Washington was sent to CDC for antigenic characterization by hemagglutination-inhibition testing. This specimen was found to be closely related antigenically to the influenza A (H3N2) component of the vaccine (A/Perth/16/2009-like).

                      An outbreak due to influenza A (H3) was reported from a facility in Pierce County during week 51.
                      • The proportion of outpatient and emergency room visits for influenza-like illness (ILI) remained low.

                          • During week 52, 6 (4.3&#37 of 139 specimens tested by the World Health Organization Collaborating Laboratories in Washington were positive for influenza. All influenza A viruses subtyped this season have been influenza A (H3) viruses.
                          • The proportion of outpatient and emergency room visits for influenza-like illness (ILI) remained low.
                          • No novel influenza viruses have been detected in Washington this season.

                            • There have been increased detections of positive influenza tests over the past two weeks but influenza activityhas remained low overall in Washington.
                            • During week 1, 7 (2.8&#37 of 250 specimens tested by the World Health Organization (WHO) Collaborating Laboratories in Washington were positive for influenza. During the past four weeks, 80% of positive specimenshave been influenza A viruses and 20% have been influenza B viruses. Almost all subtyped influenza A specimens were influenza A H3 viruses.
                            • The proportion of outpatient and emergency room visits for influenza-like illness (ILI) remained low, 0.5%.

                              0.8% positive for influenza (A/2009H1N1, A/H3)

                              Since July 24, 2011, the Washington State Department of Health (DOH) has received one report of a laboratory-confirmed influenza death. This death was due to influenza B virus.
