BEIJING (Reuters) - Two Chinese women have died from the H1N1 flu strain in Beijing in the past 10 days, Chinese state media said on Sunday, the first reported deaths from the virus in China's capital since 2010.

A 65-year-old cancer patient died on Friday and a 22-year-old migrant worker died on December 27, the Beijing Daily said on its website, citing the city's Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

Flu cases in Beijing are at their highest level in five years and the H1N1 strain has become the most dominant, the centre's director Deng Ying said.

The rise in cases corresponds with weeks of record low temperatures in Beijing and across much of China.

Deaths 'not sign' flu virus is out of control
    By Wang Qingyun (China Daily)
    08:45, January 07, 2013

Two people have died in Beijing since late December after contracting a flu virus that caused a global panic in 2009.

Yet, despite its potential for harm, the virus ? initially known as swine flu ? is not as threatening as it was originally and can be contained, according to Beijing Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Both victims of the influenza A, or H1N1, virus were already in poor health when they contracted it, said Pang Xinghuo, deputy director of the organization...
One victim, (the younger one), had anemia and one victim had late stage bone marrow cancer.

A public health official also said that of 375 flu-like illnesses, 24.53 percent were positive for influenza.

China is admitting to very few flu deaths for a total population of 1.3 billion.

Why have they dropped the prices of over 400 varieties of respiratory drugs and why is there a shortage? Is smog the only reason?

China - Shortages in drugs to treat respiratory illnesses - government cuts prices 15% -50% in 400 varieties of drugs
