Measles: 'Alarming rate' of south west Wales epidemic

Health officials say a measles epidemic is "spreading at an alarming rate across areas of Wales".

The warning comes as latest figures show the number of cases in the Swansea area have more than doubled in the last three weeks.

Public Health Wales say there are 432 cases in total, of which 116 have been reported in the last week alone and 51 people have been hospitalised.

Parents are being urged to get their children vaccinated with MMR jabs.

Although cases have been reported across Wales, the majority are in Abertawe Bro Morgannwg, Powys and Hywel Dda health board areas.

But the outbreak of the highly infectious and potentially fatal virus shows no signs of fading, PHW says...

Measles vaccination rate 'would take two years to protect those at risk'

                      Mar 27 2013

The uptake of the MMR vaccine during the measles epidemic in Wales has been so low that it could take two years to vaccinate all those at risk, health officials have warned.

Public Health Wales said that just over 1% of the 3,800 unvaccinated children in the Swansea area had received the MMR jab in the past week, despite warnings that the disease was spreading at an “alarming rate”.

Officials say they have been left “disappointed” by the low uptake...

The measles outbreak in Wales is predicted to top 500 cases on Wednesday as health officials expect a ?significant rise? following the Easter weekend.

Public Health Wales said officials had reported seeing a high number of cases of the disease during the Bank Holiday period and remain disappointed that vaccination rates have not significantly improved in the last week.

The rise in the number of cases, which last week stood at 432, will be confirmed on Wednesday...

NEW figures show that a measles outbreak in the North-East is continuing to spread.

The latest figures published by Public Health England (PHE) show that since the beginning of September 2012, when the numbers started increasing, 200 confirmed cases and 176 suspected cases of the illness have now been reported.

This is an increase of 19 confirmed and 14 suspected cases on the previous week.

Hospital admissions soar as measles outbreak shows no signs of letting up

4:34pm Friday 5th April 2013 in News Photograph of the Author By Barry Nelson, Health Editor

SIXTY-FOUR people in the region have needed hospital treatment for complications from measles during the current outbreak, health experts have revealed.

There are fears that as the outbreak shows no sign of tailing off there could be more serious cases arising from complications.

In one case a patient with measles from the North-East had to be admitted to a specialist heart unit in another part of the UK because they developed a rare complication which resulted in inflammation of the heart...
