Dozens killed as 160-mph typhoon hits Philippines

"The strongest typhoon to hit the Philippines this year pounded the southern island of Mindanao on Tuesday, killing dozens as it destroyed homes and brought down power and communication lines.

At least 81 people died in Mindanao, ABS-CBNnews.com cited officials as saying.

Typhoon Bopha made landfall at dawn, uprooting trees and tearing off roofs. The Weather Channel said the storm was packing maximum sustained winds of 160 mph and was the equivalent of a category five hurricane.

At least 43 people were killed in flash floods and landslides near a mining area on Mindanao, ABS-CBN reported, saying waters and mudslides had swept through an army post.

A television reporter said she saw numerous bodies lined up near the army base.

Disaster official Liza Mazo, said more casualties were expected to be discovered as search and rescue teams fanned out."

Death toll from Philippine typhoon passes 270
    Bullit Marquez, Associated Press

5:07AM EST December 5. 2012 - NEW BATAAN, Philippines (AP) ? Mud-stained bodies covered with banana leaves were laid out in a row and survivors dried their soiled belongings on the roadside under a bright sun Wednesday, a day after a typhoon killed more than 270 people in the southern Philippines.

Officials feared many more bodies could be found as rescuers reach hard-hit areas that had been isolated by landslides, floods and downed communications.

At least 151 people have died in the worst-hit province of Compostela Valley since Typhoon Bopha began lashing the region early Tuesday, including 66 villagers and soldiers who perished in a flash flood that swamped two emergency shelters and a military camp in New Bataan town, provincial spokeswoman Fe Maestre told the Associated Press.

NEW BATAAN (AP) ? Stunned parents searching for missing children examined a row of mud-stained bodies covered with banana leaves while survivors dried their soaked belongings on roadsides yesterday, a day after a powerful typhoon killed nearly 300 people in the southern Philippines.

Officials fear more bodies may be found as rescuers reach hard-hit areas that were isolated by landslides, floods and downed communications.

At least 151 people died in the worst-hit province of Compostela Valley when Typhoon Bopha lashed the region Tuesday, including 78 villagers and soldiers who perished in a flash flood that swamped two emergency shelters and a military camp, provincial spokeswoman Fe Maestre said.

Disaster-response agencies reported 284 dead in the region and 14 fatalities elsewhere from the typhoon, one of the strongest to hit the country this year.

About 80 people survived the deluge in New Bataan with injuries, and Interior Secretary Mar Roxas, who visited the town, said 319 others remained missing.

Typhoon Bopha: Death Toll Tops 350 In Philippines; Scores Missing In Worst-Hit Areas

"Stunned parents searching for missing children examined a row of mud-stained bodies covered with banana leaves while survivors dried their soaked belongings on roadsides as the death toll from the southern Philippines' powerful typhoon climbed to about 350 people Thursday with nearly 400 missing.

The Office of Civil Defense reported that more bodies were retrieved from hardest-hit Compostela Valley and Davao Oriental as well as six other provinces.

At least 200 of the victims died in Compostela Valley alone when Typhoon Bopha struck Tuesday, including 78 villagers and soldiers who perished in a flash flood that swamped two emergency shelters and a military camp.

"Entire families may have been washed away," said Interior Secretary Mar Roxas, who visited New Bataan on Wednesday.

The farming town of 45,000 people was a muddy wasteland of collapsed houses and coconut and banana trees felled by Bopha's ferocious winds.

Bodies of victims were laid on the ground for viewing by people searching for missing relatives. Some were badly mangled after being dragged by raging floodwaters over rocks and other debris. A man sprayed insecticide on the remains to keep away swarms of flies."

Camps overflow as typhoon Bopha toll passes 500

"HUNDREDS of thousands of survivors of a deadly typhoon crammed into packed shelters Friday, braving the stench of corpses as the government vowed action to prevent storm disasters.

...Among the 306,000 left homeless by the storm was Violy Saging, 38, huddled in a basketball gym in New Bataan, one of only a few buildings left standing in the town which is a centre for the nation's banana and gold mining industries.

...The gym's concrete floor was caked with mud, and part of its roof had been carried off by the cyclone, exposing the homeless to heavy rain that began pouring again Friday."

Bangkok Post: Philippines braces for typhoon return

"A powerful typhoon that has killed hundreds of people and wreaked devastation in the Philippines was set to smash into the country again Sunday, forecasters warned.

Typhoon Bopha had looked to be heading away after destroying whole communities in the south, but the official weather agency said Saturday it had unexpectedly turned and would make landfall again, this time in the north.

The agency urged people to prepare for fierce winds of up to 160 kilometres (about 100 miles) an hour and heavy rains when the storm slams into the northern tip of the main island of Luzon in the early hours..."
