During Week 42 (October 17-23), less than 1% of all specimens tested for influenza were
positive. DOHMH’s active laboratory surveillance system reported six positive laboratory results for
influenza A, identified by rapid testing and confirmed by PCR. Approximately 8.5% of specimens
submitted for respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) testing were positive.

ILI in ages 0-4 on steady rise
During Week 43 (October 24-30), approximately 2% of all specimens tested for influenza
were positive. DOHMH’s active laboratory surveillance system reported 17 positive laboratory results for
influenza A, identified by rapid testing and six confirmed by viral isolation, as well as one positive
influenza B identified by rapid testing. Approximately 12% of specimens submitted for respiratory
syncytial virus (RSV) testing were positive. Limited subtyping of positive influenza A specimens in the
past three weeks has identified all as H3N2.

influenza were positive. DOHMH’s active laboratory surveillance system reported 14 positive laboratory
results for influenza A, identified by rapid testing and three confirmed by viral isolation or PCR. No
positive influenza B was identified. Approximately 11% of specimens submitted for respiratory syncytial
virus (RSV) testing were positive. Limited subtyping of positive influenza A specimens in the past several

Overall influenza activity citywide is low but has been steadily increasing.
ILI: 2.4% of all weekly visits
Multiple patients have been hospitalized with laboratory- confirmed influenza.
So far this season there has been one reported influenza A outbreak involving
two patients at a long-term care facility as well as occurrences of nosocomial transmission of
influenza A at two acute care facilities.
5% of all specimens tested for influenza were positive.

During the week of Dec 18th-23rd (Week 51), influenza A was confirmed at eight long-term care facilities, with several hospitalizations and one death.
During Week 50 (December 12-18), approximately 11% of all specimens tested for influenza were positive.

Influenza-like-illness visits reported to ILINet are at 4.3% of all weekly visits, which is above the regional and national baselines. Over 360 patients have been hospitalized with laboratory-confirmed influenza since the beginning of October. One pediatric influenza-associated death was reported during early December. There have been 14 long-term care facilities with laboratory confirmed influenza in December, with at least twenty hospitalizations and two known deaths.

Influenza activity is now widespread in New York City. Influenza-like-illness visits reported to ILINet are at 4.4% of all weekly visits, which is above the regional and national baselines. Over 500 patients have been hospitalized with laboratory-confirmed influenza since
the beginning of October. One pediatric influenza-associated death was reported during early December. There have been 19 long-term care facilities with laboratory confirmed influenza since December 1, with over thirty hospitalizations and three known deaths.

Influenza-like-illness visits reported to ILINet are at 3.4% of all weekly visits, which is above the regional and national baselines. Over 650 patients have been hospitalized with laboratory-confirmed influenza since the beginning of October. One pediatric influenza-associated death was reported during early December. There have been 29 long-term care facilities with laboratory confirmed influenza since December 1, with 13 outbreaks identified in the past two weeks. Over 40 residents were reported to have been hospitalized to date with four known deaths.

15% positive specimens for influenza Nosocomial Respiratory Outbreak Reporting
There were two new known outbreaks of influenza at long term care facilities for this week, involving one and
two residents respectively. Since December 1, there have been approximately 37 known outbreaks of
influenza A at long-term care facilities, with over 220 residents affected, over 50 known hospitalizations and four reported deaths.
