Re: NYC and NYS 2010-2011 Season: Weeks 40-4 (No New Deaths, Total 2)
Week 4:
No new death; total 2
NYS:
* The overall level of flu activity is currently high and appears to be stable when compared to last week.
* The number of people hospitalized with flu is currently 295 and appears to be decreasing when compared to last week.
* The number of pediatric influenza-associated deaths in NYS (including NYC) is currently 0 reported this week.
* The total number of pediatric influenza-associated deaths in NYS (including NYC) since October 3, 2010, is 2.
NOTE: Influenza B appears to be increasing
NYC:
During Week 4 (January 23-29, 2011), approximately 15% of all specimens tested for influenza were positive. DOHMH?s active laboratory surveillance system reported 280 positive laboratory results for influenza A, identified by rapid testing and 204 confirmed by viral isolation or PCR. There were 38 specimens that were positive for influenza B or 12% of the total positive influenza results. About 14% of specimens submitted for respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) testing were positive. Subtyping of positive influenza A specimens has identified most as H3N2, although we are now seeing an increase in specimens identified with H1N1.
Outpatient Influenza-like Illness Surveillance Network (ILINet)
During Week 4 of 2011, approximately 2.7% of all sentinel provider visits were due to ILI. Starting in week 5 of the 2007-2008 season, these data reflect the inclusion of data derived from the syndromic surveillance system for emergency department visits. Our ILI rate is slightly above the Mid-Atlantic baseline of 2.4 and the national baseline of 2.5. Data have been received from 30 participating sentinel providers outside of the syndromic surveillance system, which includes data from 51 emergency departments in the City.
