?Weather change makes swine flu virus active?

      Ludhiana:

The change of weather is a major contributor to the increasing activity level of the swine flu virus and that is why the majority of cases reported from Punjab were in February and March. This was revealed by Dr Deepak Bhatia Nodal, officer for Swine flu in the state.

Two patients have already died of swine flu this week; they were from Moga and Haryana. Giving data, Dr Bhatia said, ?In the post-pandemic period from August onwards, a total of 37 cases have been reported from Punjab, of which 17 resulted in death. Out of these 37 cases, nearly 15 patients are from February onwards. Although no clear reason is there, it seems that the change of season is the reason for the virus becoming active. The same happened when winter was approaching.?

A meeting was also held in the DC?s office to take stock of the situation, at which Civil Surgeon Satwant Bhalla stated that a control room has been set up with the phone number 2444193 for all queries.?

She added a report of two suspected cases is still pending. Dr Deepak asked the hospitals to start treatment on the lines of swine flu at first symptom and keep isolation wards ready.

17 swine flu cases in Ludhiana

LUDHIANA: Swine flu is gripping the city, creating a panic among the health authorities as well as the city residents as 30 patients with suspected symptoms approached the city hospitals out of which 17 tested positive for the disease.

Out of these 17 patients, five belong to the city. Of the 10 deaths that have been reported due to swine flu, four deceased belonged to the Ludhiana district while others belonged to other areas of the state.

The five positive patients include a six-month-old girl still admitted to Dayanand Medical College and Hospital.

Talking to TOI, State Integrated Disease Surveillance Project (IDSP) officer Deepak Bhatia said though the peak season of swine flu had passed, cases were still being reported. It being a matter of concern, they had appealed to the National Institute of Communicable Diseases (NICD) to analyze the cause for the spread by sending nasal swab samples for testing.

He said that they had released guidelines to the local health department to disseminate some information to the local resident and had planned to organize a workshop for the private doctors through Indian Medical Association (IMA) during the next week.

District health officer Jagpal Singh said they had distributed pamphlets to local residents about precautions to prevent the spreading of the disease.

Jagdeep Whig, a doctor with the DMCH, said it was really surprising to see the increase in the number of patients during this season but they have arranged for more beds in the isolation wards to provide better facilities for the patients. He said the reason for the spread of the disease might be the suppression of the virus in the patients's body.

Swati Sharma, a resident of Model Town, said that they had come to know about the increased number of swine flu patients and were really worried.
