Flu clinics are set to re-open Today in Peel for those who need a second dose of H1N1 vaccine.

The second round of vaccines will be given to children from 6 months to 3 years old and those aged 3 to 9 who have chronic health conditions.

Parents need to remember that children require at least a 21-day gap between getting the first and second shots of the H1N1 vaccine, said Susan Sperling, a spokesperson for the Toronto Public Health.

She said the clinics are also open to the general public who want to get both the seasonal and H1N1 vaccines.

"I'm not sure how many people will show up, but we are prepared for whoever comes," Sperling said.

"Towards the end, our (first round of) clinics didn't have any lineups, so it's hard to predict the numbers we will see for the second round."

Ottawa flu vaccination clinics to reopen doors

After vaccinating about 50 per cent of the city?s population before Christmas, Ottawa?s H1N1 clinics are back.

Starting Wednesday and running through Feb. 10, Ottawa Public Health will be offering its roving clinics.

While associate medical officer of health Dr. Nadine Sicard said Ottawa is past the peak of the second wave of the pandemic flu, Ottawa Public Health is still encouraging people to get the vaccine, and expects to vaccinate between 1,000 and 1,500 people per day.

While the original goal was to vaccinate about half of the population, the city needs to vaccinate between 70 and 80 per cent of residents in order to significantly decrease transmission, said Sicard.

Although the city is seeing ?transmission at a lower rate,? Sicard said, ?we?re still seeing some flu activity. The virus is still in circulation here in Ottawa.?

One person was hospitalized in connection with H1N1 over the holidays.

Seasonal flu shots will also be available at the clinics, which will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic High School, ?cole ?l?mentaire catholique Jean-Robert-Gauthier and Brookfield High School from 3:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday. The schedule is available on the city?s website.

The vaccination of more than 30,000 residents against H1N1 influenza has helped Chatham-Kent weather the pandemic well, so far.

A H1N1 influenza report, presented to the Chatham-Kent Board of Health this week, confirmed there have been 71 cases of H1N1 in the community.

The highest proportion of cases -- 29 -- were in the under age 20 category. A total of 17 people aged 40-59 contracted the virus along with 15 people in the 20-39 age group. Only nine people 60 and over had H1N1.

One person's age is unknown.

A total of 26 people who had confirmed H1N1 were admitted to hospital with seven of those were admitted to intensive care.

School absenteeism reached its peak on Oct. 27, 2009 when 15 elementary schools across Chatham-Kent reported absenteeism rates higher than 10 per cent to the health unit.

While cases of H1N1 influenza have declined, Laura Zettler, epidemiologist for the health unit, said, "it is still a circulating virus."

She added it is the responsibility of the health unit "to keep the citizens of Chatham-Kent protected from this virus."

Flu season runs until April and residents can still come to the health unit for a H1N1 or seasonal flu shot. An appointment can be booked by calling the flu hotline at 519-352-7270 ext. 2800.

53% of Residents Receive H1N1 Shot

The largest mass vaccination campaign in Ottawa Public Health history has wrapped up.

Medical Officer of Health Dr. Isra Levy estimates 53 per cent of the population received the H1N1 flu shot since the vaccine was first available at the end of October.

Dr. Levy tells CFRA News there is probably immunity in the community of 60 or 70 per cent, which puts Ottawa in a good position if the H1N1 strain circulates again.

Levy says a third wave of the H1N1 flu virus is unlikely since a majority of Ottawa residents are now vaccinated against the virus.

Ottawa Public Health has been operating H1N1 and seasonal flu shot clinics since late October, with mass vaccination clinics continuing in January and February.

Levy says interest has been "steady", but down since the peak in November. Public Health estimates between 100 and 200 people a day have been vaccinated at city clinics this month.
