  • Man in Rio Preto dies of suspected H1N1, infant in Mirassol also hospitalized

What draws my attention here is that an infant from Mirassol is hospitalized with suspect H1N1. Mirassol is the same location where last week's ProMED undiagnosed fatality (which is confirmed as dengue by the Brazilian national lab, even though ProMED has not issued the confirmation) is located.

I suspect both viruses might be circulating in that area. It is a fairly heavily populated area (it has both a sports team - volleyball?- and an airport). There is no indication this infant is a contact of the dengue fatality.

A man of 38 years, he had not named, died on January 28 at the Base Hospital in Black River, with a suspected Influenza A (H1N1) swine influenza. According to a spokesperson for the hospital, the patient was a resident of Frontier (MG). Last year, the swine flu has 165 victims in Rio Preto, of which 14 died.

Another patient, a boy of seven months, a resident of Mirassol, is also admitted to the HB with suspected flu. A spokesperson for the hospital, reports that the child was admitted on Saturday. The boy is in isolation, but is doing well. The tests done [one the first] man were sent for analysis at the Instituto Adolfo Lutz, in Sao Paulo. The result should be released in coming days. He was hospitalized in critical condition, on 28 January and died the same day. The cases were reported by the HB bodies.
