Yercaud tribals hit by mystery fever; 3 dead

SALEM: Nearly hundred persons from the tribal village of Gundur Thopu in Yercaud have been affected by a mysterious fever to which three persons have been succumbed in the last one week.
Ezumalai (58), Sakunthala (40) and Palani (35) were the tribals who died due to the fever, said villagers. The affected people complained of fever, vomiting and diarrhoea.
Located on the southern slope of Yercaud hills, Gundur is at least 20 km away from the nearest Primary Health Centre.
News about the villagers suffering in silence and isolation leaked out only on Monday when a villager Moorthy admitted two patients from Gundur to a private hospital in Salem.
Sources said that a medical team from Vazavandhi Primary Health Centre has been rushed to the village to provide medical relief.
