LOS BANOS -- The swine flu, or H1N1 virus, claimed the life of a Los Banos woman Monday.

Merced County spokeswoman Katie Albertson confirmed that a 58-year-old woman from Los Banos became the second person in the county to die of the disease. The woman's daughter, Armida Parraz, revealed her mother's identity as Alice Arredondo.

Parraz said her mother had a cough four days before she went to the doctor on Aug. 21.

"Her doctor thought we caught it in time," Parraz said.

She said Arredondo was given medicine, but had to be hospitalized at Memorial Hospital in Los Banos on Aug. 24. Parraz said her mother was transferred to Good Samaritan Hospital in San Jose the same day.

A spokesman at the Santa Clara County Coroner's Office confirmed that Arredondo died Monday at 3:35 a.m.

As of Sept. 3 the county's Web site had 15 reported cases of people being hospitalized by the H1N1 virus.
