Long Island Resident Dies From Swine Flu
UNIONDALE, N.Y. (CBS) ―
Health officials say an adult on Long Island has died after suffering from swine flu.
The Nassau County resident was over the age of 55 and had serious underlying medical conditions.
To protect the privacy of the family, the county health department declined to release any other information about the patient.
Since the spring of 2009, three deaths have been reported among Nassau County residents with confirmed cases of the disease.
The swine flu vaccine is expected to be available very soon, and the number of people seeking treatment for the flu is already at unprecedented levels for this time of year.
Pharmacies like Duane Reade, Rite Aid and CVS are all offering flu and other vaccines, enticing patients with the lure of no appointment and for as little as $30.
CVS is going even further, handing out 100,000 free flu shots to anyone who's unemployed. New York City schools will all have free H1N1 vaccinations for kids and many counties are offering free flu vaccines as well.
