Killer Mosquitoes? Press briefing on the risk to Europe from vector-borne diseases

    Stockholm, 12 June 2008

    What:
A press meeting and live webcast with key European experts.

The briefing takes place at the end of a meeting hosted by the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) looking at the emergence of vector-borne diseases in Europe.

Vector-borne diseases are those spread by insects, such as mosquitoes or sand-flies, by parasites, such as ticks, and by small animals, such as rodents.

They include diseases such as malaria, dengue fever, chikungunya fever, hanta fever and tick-borne encephalitis.

    Why:
Every year millions of people world-wide are infected with vector-borne diseases.

A number of these diseases have the potential to be transmitted and to cause outbreaks in Europe, as was seen last summer when mosquitoes in Ravenna province, Italy started spreading chikungunya fever.

ECDC is hosting an expert conference to assess the risk factors for the spread of these diseases in Europe.

The experts will look at the risk for the introduction, spread and establishment of the vectors and the diseases they may transmit, which is influenced by ecological and climate change, changed human behaviour, the implementation of public health control measures, etc.

The experts will present their conclusions on which of these risk factors are driving the emergence of vector borne diseases and will discuss and provide the options in order to help the decision makers to minimise the risk.

    When:
Thursday 12 June, press conference and live webcast starts at 12:00, followed by opportunity for individual interviews

    Where:
ECDC, Tomtebodav?gen 11a, Karolinska Campus, Solna

    Who:
Speakers at the briefing will be:

    * Dr. Denis Coulombier, Head of Preparedness and Response Unit, ECDC
    * Guy Hendrickx, DVM, PhD, Managing Director of Avia-GIS and Secretary of Steering Committee on Emerging Diseases in a changing Europe Environment (EDEN)
    * Renaud Lancelot, French Agricultural Research Centre for International Development (CIRAD) and Co-ordinator on Emerging Diseases in a changing Europe Environment (EDEN)
    * Tanja Wolf, WHO Regional Office for Europe, European Centre for Environment and Health, Rome
