An Indonesian teen has died of bird flu raising the death toll in the country hardest hit by the virus to 113, health officials said.
The latest death comes amid an ongoing dispute between the Southeast Asian country and the World Health Organisation (WHO) over sharing samples of the virus from patients there to monitor whether the H5N1 virus is mutating to a more dangerous form.
The 15-year-old girl died late last week after being hospitalised for 10 days in Semarang, a city 400km east of the capital Jakarta, said Agus Suryanto who headed the team of doctors treating her.
Tests from two local laboratories came back positive for bird flu, said Tatik Suryanti, a health agency official.
Authorities believe the girl - who lived near a chicken slaughterhouse - became infected with the H5N1 virus after coming into contact with sick poultry. An investigation continues.
Indonesia has regularly recorded human deaths from bird flu since the virus began ravaging poultry stocks across Asia in 2003.
Its toll of 113 accounts for nearly half the 245 recorded fatalities worldwide.
Bird flu remains hard for people to catch, but health experts worry it could mutate into a form that passes easily between humans, possibly triggering a pandemic that could kill millions worldwide.
Indonesia is considered a potential hotspot for that to happen, but the country's health minister has refused to share virus samples with WHO for more than two years.
She argues that pharmaceutical companies will use the samples to make vaccines that are ultimately unaffordable to her own people.
Critics say Indonesia's policy is making it harder to see if the virus is mutating into a more dangerous form.

Indonesian teenager dies of suspected bird flu in Java
                ------------------------------------------------------
A 15 year old Indonesian [girl from Semarang] is believed to have died from
suspected bird flu in Central Java on Friday [7 Nov 2008].

A total of 113 people have died of avian influenza or bird flu in
Indonesia, the worst affected country in the world. Agus Suryanto, a
medical official, said that [the girl] died from respiratory failure that
followed a high fever. "There was a chance that she got infected by bird
flu as she had been living nearby a chicken abattoir," Agus told
kompas.com. He said that the hospital had taken and diagnosed [?] a blood
sample from the patient but was still waiting for the results of the test.

The Ministry of Health of Indonesia in September [2008] retrospectively
announced 2 confirmed cases of human infection with the H5N1 avian
influenza virus. According to the UN World Health Organization, of the 138
cases confirmed to date in Indonesia, 113 have been fatal. A total of 246
deaths have been recorded worldwide. [As of 10 Sep 2008 (the latest
report), WHO's table of the cumulative number of confirmed human cases of
avian influenza A/(H5N1) gives the number of deaths in Indonesia as 112 and
the number of cases as 137; see

[In an earlier report from Indonesia this case was confused with that of a
32 year old poultry worker who died on Monday 3 Nov 2008 of suspected avian
influenza. Laboratory analysis did not confirm the diagnosis of bird flu
                infection in his case.

Apart from proximity to a poultry abattoir, there is no compelling reason
to indicate that the teenager has died as a result of avian influenza virus
infection. The results of laboratory tests are pending.

Semarang is located on the northern coast of Central Java and can be found

Section Head Kesehatan of the City (ET AL) Semarang Tatik Suryati explained, the KLB determination for the bird flu illness was different from the public's other illness, like dengue fever dengue fever (DBD) or diarrhoea. Especially for bird flu, the KLB determination after having one patient was stated positive contracted the virus of AI. ?Meski only had one positive victim bird flu, we appointed as KLB,?he said ended the National ceremony of the warning of the Health Day (HKN) the 44 in the page of the Town Hall on Wednesday (12/11).

Tatik added, his side has reported this problem to the Guardian of the Semarang City. Moreover, his side also has melakulan the spreading precaution of the virus of AI. Penanganan from ET AL has been carried out since DS was stated as suspect bird flu. The KLB status will personally continue to be evaluated periodically, before eventually was pulled out if the condition has really been controlled ?Kami has formed the team of the control and the control of official together bird flu related. The handling had personally been carried out since casualties were stated suspect flu burung,? he explained.
According to Kasi Pencegahan of the Bersumber Binatang Illness (P2B2) ET AL Semarang Sri Ani Handayani, his side carried out the taking of the sample of blood of the neighbours and casualties's family. There were four people who were taken the sample of his blood, namely Wanda, 8; Jefery, 10; Kusyanto, 35, and Darsono Pengambilan of the sample of the blood was done last Sunday (9/11). ?Pengambilan the sample of blood was done against four people, namely the father, the mother, the older brother, and casualties's nephew. Results of the blood inspection could be it was estimated known one till two weeks mendatang,? he said.
Sri Ani added, his plan till 14 days in the future after the KLB determination, DKK with Dinkes Central Java and Pukesmas local will establish the command post. Eventually, this command post as the step for anticipation if having the resident who complained about the fever ET AL of Semarang, continued he, also will carry out counselling to the resident, as well as carried out the monitoring against the route that often was passed through by casualties. Including casualties's school, namely the SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 11 Semarang. In the school that was in the District of Lamper Tengah Semarang Selatan this also would be carried out by counselling about the bird flu illness. ?Rencana him not only the resident who will be given by us counselling. Casualties's school friends will also be given by us counselling.

The Was-was resident In The Meantime, casualties's neighbour Agus Supriyoto said, since the DS death, his territory already three times were carried out by spraying of the disinfectant liquid (medicine of the eradicator of the virus bacteria. Red) as far as the radius of three RT from seven RT in the RW I Kelurahan Siwalan territory. Especially for RT 5, continued he, almost did not have the resident who maintained the kept animal. However, his territory was the sending route of the chicken to the reduction house in the poultry belonging to Tawondo. At least, Agus's words, in a day had three sending times of the poultry. The amount reached 250 tails. Same poultries spent the night overnight in the Tawondo house. The resident personally agree to to carry out the closing of this poultry abattoir. The letter from the Pertanian Service and the letter from the resident also has been available. ?Pemotongan the poultry has been since the 1980 's. In one RW, there were 4 reduction houses in the poultry. One among them already ditutup,? obviously him.
Agus added, his side asked for counselling and spraying continually in his territory until being stated safe from the bird flu virus. Because since the death of casualties, there was his one resident that underwent treated inap in RSUP Kariadi Semarang since the last four days. Results of the temporary analysis, his resident was affected by the typhus illness. ?Secara personal, I also was?was because of the bird flu virus in in no time his spreading. If possible, had giving vaksi in a manner continued until several minggu,? please Chairman LPMK KELURAHAN Siwalan this.

Untuk this extermination, his side will coordinate with the resident. ?Kami will not rage carried out the extermination of the animal. We will carry him out with the resident. But if could, there was the initiative from the resident sendiri,? he said.

Said, for results of the sample test of the poultry personally, till now did still not go out. Therefore, his side was still carrying out the closing against the reduction house in this poultry. If results of his inspection have gone out and evidently was unproven the virus came from the reduction house in the poultry, his side was still carrying out the further survey. Because of the Semarang City not was the area of the supplier of the poultry. ?Belum certainly, this virus came from the reduction house in the poultry around casualties's house. Results of the laboratory test also not yet keluar,? he said .

In The Meantime, Komisi D DPRD Kota Semarang Ahmadi Chairman asked that the Pertanian Service was more intensive in supervising the circulation and the distribution of the poultry in Semarang. He considered the supervision was rather loose because for a long time did not have the case of bird flu. ?Karena has been too long, seemed to be not paid again attention to. So the Pertanian Service must be more intensive in carrying out the supervision of the circulation unggas,? he urged. Ahmadi explained, at this time has been Regional Regulations about the Health of the Veteriner Community. Only, he was not convinced whether these Regional Regulations already disosialisasikan to the community or not yet. ?Mungkin his socialisation could be united with the socialisation of the other activity like the fever berdarah,? he said (dit/aro) http://www.radarsemarang.com/metropo...u-burung-.html

                        Nov 12, 2008 (CIDRAP News) ?

A 15-year-old Indonesian girl from central Java recently died from an H5N1 avian influenza infection, according to news reports that cited a local health official and a physician who treated the girl.

In June Indonesia's health ministry stopped reporting new H5N1 cases promptly, opting instead for periodic updates.

Over the past few days media reports had said the girl's death was suspicious and that she lived near a poultry slaughterhouse, and today the Associated Press (AP) and Reuters reported that the girl had an H5n1 infection.

If the World Health Organization (WHO) recognizes the girl's infection, it will be listed as Indonesia's 138th H5N1 case and 113th death.

Agus Suryanto, head of the medical team that treated the girl at Doctor Karyadi Hospital in Semarang, told Reuters that health ministry labs confirmed that the girl died of an avian influenza infection.

He told the AP that the girl was hospitalized 10 days before she died.

Tatik Suryanti, a local health official, told the AP that tests today from two laboratories were positive for the H5N1 virus.

According to a Nov 7 report from the Jakarta Post, Suryanto said the girl died on Nov 7 after having respiratory failure with a high fever. She was from Semarang, the Post reported.

In other developments, hospital officials in Bandung, Indonesia, are investigating the apparently pneumonia-related death of a 32-year-old who slaughtered chickens and kept backyard birds, according to a Nov 8 Post report.

Though initial tests on the man were negative for the H5N1 virus, Cissy Rachiana Prawira, director of Bandung's Hasan Sadikin Hospital, told the Post that further testing was ordered because he had direct contact with poultry.

Animal health officials tested about 500 chickens at the man's house, one of which tested positive for the H5N1 virus, the Post reported.

Indonesia's last two H5N1 victims?two men who died in July?were confirmed by the country's health ministry on Sep 9. Their H5N1 illnesses and deaths were recognized by the WHO on Sep 10.

The WHO's global H5N1 count is 387 cases and 245 deaths.

Indonesia denies new case of bird flu death

Indonesian Health Ministry on Thursday denied foreign reports that a 15-year-old girl from Central Java had died of avian influenza, saying two laboratory tests had showed her blood samples negative of H5N1.

The girl died on Friday in Karyadi Hospital in Semarang city, 250 miles east of Jakarta after 10 days of medical treatment.

Denying several foreign reports that the girl had been confirmed dead of bird flu, Health Minister Siti Padilah Sufari said: "Both of the laboratory tests showed that she was negative of bird flu, so the total death toll (of bird flu) remains 112."

A total of 137 people had been infected by bird flu in Indonesia, making the country hardest hit by the deadly virus. The avian influenza has killed so far 244 people in the world.

Indonesia has been striving to diminish the factors that facilitate the spread of the bird flu virus, including big territory, traditional way of rising chickens on back yard and lack of obedience of provincial administration in implementing Jakarta's relevant decisions.

She went to a Community Health Center first, however it is not clear if she was treated there as a bird flu patient.
