H5N1 Expansion en Africa
La FAO advierte que la gripe aviar continua su expansión en África
''La amenaza podría prolongarse por años'', advierten los portavoces de la FAO.
Mientras que se ha logrado controlar con éxito la gripe aviar en Europa occidental y gran parte del Sudeste asiático –excepto en Indonesia–, la epidemia continúa todavía propagándose en África, en donde seguirá siendo una amenaza durante los próximos años, según afirmó hoy David Harcharik, Director General Adjunto de la FAO, en una reunión del Consejo Económico y Social de la ONU (ECOSOC).
“En la mayor parte de los casos, en los lugares en los que la gripe aviar ha hecho su aparición la comunidad internacional y los países afectados hemos conseguido parar la epidemia de raíz”, aseguró al intervenir en un foro especial del ECOSOC sobre la gripe aviar. que tuvo lugar en Ginebra.
Pero “la gripe aviar representa una amenaza constante y con toda probabilidad debemos prepararnos a combatirla durante años”, advirtió, señalando que la enfermedad supone todavía un motivo de preocupación en Indonesia y continúa su expansión en África, en donde existe el riesgo de que se haga endémica en diversos países.
Harcharik mencionó las dificultades para aplicar las medidas de control adecuadas, entre ellas el sacrificio de animales, el pago de compensaciones a los campesinos y el control sobre los movimientos de aves en los países africanos. Otra complicación la representa el comercio ilícito de aves de corral.
“Seguiremos estando en peligro mientras no se detenga de forma eficaz ese tipo de comercio con servicios veterinarios oficiales más rigurosos, y no logremos una mejor vigilancia, medidas de emergencia, diagnóstico e información sobre los nuevos casos”, subrayó.
Una amenaza persistenteEl representante de la FAO insistió que es imperativo actual de forma rápida y decisiva para detener la gripe aviar en donde quiera que aparezca, ya que mientras el virus H5N1 siga en circulación, continuará siendo una amenaza para la comunidad internacional.
Por el momento el virus H5N1 no ha mutado a una forma transmisible de un ser humano a otro, pero si lo hiciera, el resultado podría ser una pandemia letal de vastas proporciones, aseguró.
