BREAKING NEWS: Jackson Township NJ elementary school student dies from H1N1 virus

July 1, 2009 by Jackson NJ Online Staff Writer

Jackson, NJ ? Today, the Jackson Township School District announced on their website that a child from the Lucy N. Holman Elementary School has died from the H1N1 (Swine Flu) virus. The age and grade of the child have not yet been released. The announcement was made earlier this morning on New Jersey 101.5 radio.

Three weeks ago, several students in Goetz Middle School, in the Jackson Township School District had been confirmed with the H1N1 virus which prompted the district to send a letter home to all parents stating the outbreak at the middle school was under control and warned parents of the syptoms of the H1N1 virus and precaustionary measures to take to avoid the spread of the virus.

At the June 16th Jackson Township Boar of Education meeting, there was no mention of the virus within the district to the public in attendance. Just moments ago, Lucy N. Holman principal Theresa Lictra?s autmotated phone message was sent to all Holman parents. The message told parents to visit the Lucy N. Holman website, but did not say why. The website in reference (www.jacksonsd.org) had information posted concerning the death and counseling options for students and parents.

The Ocean County Health Department today announced its first death of a county resident, who was confirmed by the State Public Health Laboratory yesterday, with the novel H1N1 virus. In addition, the young child had other underlying medical conditions.

The individual, a child from Jackson Township, was admitted to the hospital on June 25th and died on June 27th.

Ella Boyd, VMD, Public Health Coordinator , said that residents of Ocean County need to continue taking proper precautions to protect themselves and their families, including:

? Wash your hands with soap and water especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective.
? Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze and throw away the tissue or cough or sneeze in your sleeve.
? Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.
? Try to avoid contact with people who are ill.
? If you are sick, stay home.
? Wipe common household/workplace surfaces with disinfectants whose labels report virus-killing properties.
? Stay informed about the situation as it evolves from credible sources such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (www.cdc.gov) , the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services (www.state.nj.us/heatlh/er/h1n1) or the Ocean County Health Department (www.ochd.org ).

Leslie Terjesen, Ocean County Health Department Public Information Officer, said, ?If you become ill with influenza-like symptoms, including fever (100 degrees Fahrenheit, or greater), body aches, runny nose, sore throat, nausea, vomiting or diarrhea, you should contact your health care provider.?

At this time, most people who have become ill with novel H1N1 virus in the United States have experienced typical flu symptoms and have recovered without complications.

It is a very sad day for Jackson Township and students at Lucy N. Holman Elementary School as friends, family and classmates mourn the passing of six year old Zachary Martinez. Zachary was sent to Jersey Shore University Medical Center just two days after his last day in first grade. He will be missed by all who knew him at the Holman School and the Jackson Soccer Club for which he played.

Zachary Liam Martinez, 6, of Jackson, passed away Saturday, June 27, 2009, at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune. Zachary was born in Edison. Zachary completed the first grade at the Lucy N. Holman Elementary School, Jackson, and was currently a student in C.C.D. classes at St. Aloysius Roman Catholic Church, Jackson. He played for the Jackson Soccer Club and collected race cars. Zachary loved music, movies, playing Nintendo video games, and swimming in the ocean.

In lieu of flowers, the family is accepting balloons in Zachary?s memory, or donations may be made to the Ronald McDonald House, P.O. Box 3237, Long Branch, NJ 07740, and would be greatly appreciated.
