ST. LUCIE COUNTY -- A total of three people have died from complications of swine flu, St. Lucie County Health Department spokeswoman Arlease Hall said Friday.

Twenty-three-year-old Jason Schenck of Port St. Lucie was the first Treasure Coast resident to die from complications of the H1N1 strain. Schenck, who also suffered from asthma, died Tuesday at St. Lucie Medical Center after first showing signs of the flu Aug. 15.

Two other men, one 51 years old and the other 52 years old, also died of swine flu complications.

Martin and Indian River counties have not reported any deaths from swine flu, a novel strain of the flu virus that first appeared this spring in Mexico.

Health officials say H1N1 is widespread and about as severe as the seasonal flu for most people. Those most at-risk for complications from swine flu are young children, pregnant women and people with underlying medical conditions.
