Default New Caledonia: 2 new swineflu victims, 7 deaths in 14 days.

Two new victims of influenza A/H1N1

A one year old baby died August 23 in the pediatrics department at Magenta, and a woman of 36 years died Sunday at CHT Gaston Bourret.

These two new victims, who presented both a risk factor known to carry seven the number of deaths from influenza A/H1N1 in New Caledonia since the epidemic began.

A woman of 36 years died on Sunday "as a result of pneumonia caused by influenza A/H1N1. She was hospitalized from August 24 in the resuscitation department of CHT Gaston Bourret. This patient had a known risk factor, said yesterday the government of New Caledonia.

Health authorities have also confirmed the death "of an infant of one year, followed by a severe chronic disease and the virus H1N1, Sunday, August 23, in the pediatric CHT Magenta." He was a little girl. In this particular case, where "the link with the H1N1 virus has been formally established, the confirmation of the cause of his death has been" numerous exchanges between the DASS and InVS (National Institute of Health Surveillance) that led to deep investigation. "

These two new deaths bring to seven now (two children), the number of victims of influenza A/H1N1 in New Caledonia since the epidemic began.
"The H1N1 virus damages the lung tissue and it encourages bacterial infection," confirms Dr. Jean-Paul Grangeon, head of health actions to Dass. And almost all victims of the epidemic had died "as a result of pneumonia caused by this flu."

Vigilance is therefore required, particularly in people considered "at risk". Currently, about forty hospitalized patients, three are in intensive care at CHT Gaston Bourret, ten in intensive care and two in intensive care at pediatric department of the CHT Magenta.

"Morbid obesity is a risk factor that appears very clearly"

For three days, two epidemiologists INSV are in New Caledonia to increase exchanges and meetings with health professionals and health authorities with the aim of better understanding the spread of influenza A/H1N1 and Above all, preparing the ground for the Metropolis.

They should examine the medical records of patients who experienced "a severe form of influenza A and those who died trying to establish a link between the virus and risk groups, including Philippe Dunoyer reminded, of government in charge of health. He believed that "our experience will enable them to learn." Please note that a Convention between the Government and InVS was signed in July 2009, "just before the crisis."

The first data on the Caledonian most serious forms of the virus have highlighted three particular points. "Morbid obesity (Editor's note: significant obesity) is a risk factor that appears very clearly," says Dr. Grangeon, "the age of patients who are young, and the rate of infectivity is much higher than the seasonal influenza. "

The first death from influenza A has won an 8 year old girl, August 17. Between 19 and August 22, four other patients, two men of 27 and 30, and two women of 58 and 46 years, died following a respiratory pneumonia, one of the leading causes of death in influenza pandemic.

And each of them, a sudden deterioration and very rapid clinical condition occurred within five to six days after onset of symptoms.

In fourteen days, seven names were inscribed on the list of victims of influenza A/H1N1.
