21 cases of Tamiflu Resistance in Poland ? NOT
From an article just posted. It appears there are 21 cases of tamiflu resistance in Poland.
"National epidemiology consultant, Professor. Andrzej Zielinski, PAP said that in 21 cases of influenza virus mutations have been confirmed to reduce their sensitivity to the drug oseltamiwirum (Tamiflu).
Also pointed out that these mutations are still sensitive to another antiviral drug - zanamivir (Relenza it comes to medicine, available only in hospitals - PAP)."

May be you refer to this article:

I am not sure about the translation of the part on the 21 cases of Tamiflu resistance. Google tends to mix up sentences,
I tried to re arrange this part.
May be someone from Poland can check this?

Re: 21 cases of Tamiflu Resistance in Poland ?
The same number was quoted by another Polish media source. 21 would be a very significant number if they've all been found in Poland. Perhaps he was referring to a wider geographical area?

Prof. Zielinski: Mutations of the virus less sensitive to one drug
jagor, PAP
2009-11-23
In the case of 21 mutations in the influenza virus has been confirmed to reduce their sensitivity to the drug oseltamiwirum (Tamiflu) - admitted today the national epidemiology consultant, Professor. Andrzej Zielinski.
Also pointed out that these mutations are still sensitive to another antiviral drug - zanamivir (Relenza it comes to medicine, available only in hospitals). - There is no information to allow the virus to lose sensitivity to the vaccine - said prof. Zielinski.
- There are many variants of no great importance, but there are some that may be important, especially locally, including in Norway. For the moment there are no data that this mutation is spreading. The situation requires urgent follow-up. If the virus is more rife zajadliwy slower, harder, because people get sick and have no contact with others - emphasized the national epidemiology consultant.
Deaths from pneumonia or chronic illnesses
In Poland, so far six people have died A/H1N1 infected. As pointed out by Chief Sanitary Inspectorate, in all cases it is not the influenza virus was the cause of death of patients. Mainly it is the pneumonia or chronic diseases.
According to Professor. Zielinski, a matter of policy. - In such cases it is difficult to assess what had been the main cause of death. Is a matter of assessment, not the facts - the professor said. He added that complications such as execution pneumonia caused by the conduct of the flu.
Yesterday evening, died 22-years old man, in which confirmed the presence of A/H1N1 virus. Tomasz Misztal, he said the GIS, the virus was not the direct cause of death, because the man was sick with pneumonia and was burdened with GM. Patient died in hospital in the evening Człuchowie (Pomorskie Province). On Saturday, laboratory tests confirmed the presence of virus in his body.
Until now, the Polish territory has been confirmed about 580 new cases of influenza.

Hello, I speak Polish.
I'm reading this quote in a # of stories
http://www.dziennik.pl/wydarzenia/sw..._na_grype.html
http://www.newsweek.pl/artykuly/sekc...amiflu,49183,1
They're all using essentially the same phrase. Google wants to translate it as in "21 cases..... (przypadek=case, instance, event, incident)
I think the meaning is more "in 21 mutations of the flu a reduced sensitivity to Tamiflu has been confirmed."
There is an older story in which he says this magic 21 word & which I think clarifies what he was speaking about & that these quotes are NOT indicating 21 cases of Tamiflu resistance in Poland.
http://wiadomosci.onet.pl/2082439,11...h1n1,item.html
"The mutation of the virus A/H1N1, which has been observed in Norway affects its virulence while the mutation of the virus in the United States affects its resistance to Tamiflu - Andrzej Zielinski, national epidemiology consultant, told TVN 24, commenting on the "new versions" of the virus causing new flu.
We knew that this threat exists, said Andrzej Zielinski. To date, around the world 21 strains which are resistant to Tamiflu have been determined, but they are not resistant to other vaccines [SIC] so it's not a tragedy [this is a phrase meaning 'not a big deal']."
btw,
A different report has him saying:
http://wiadomosci.wp.pl/kat,1342,tit...l?ticaid=19289
"There are many mutations of no great importance, but there are some that may be important, especially locally, for example in Norway. At the moment there is no indication that this mutation is spreading. The situation requires diligent monitoring. If the virus is more virulent, it spreads more slowly, because people get much sicker and have no contact with others, emphasized the national epidemiology consultant."
That's my best reading of the "21" issue right now.
cheers,
