    Re: Turkey - H1N1- total deaths - 93

Swine flu death toll at 93, ministry announces

If necessary agreements are signed with foreign investors, the production of vaccines can begin in Turkey. Health Minister Recep Akdağ said Turkey will pay an estimated TL 300 million in 2010 to buy vaccines from abroad.
The Health Ministry announced on Thursday that the number of deaths caused by the H1N1 virus, which is widely known as swine flu, has increased and now stands at 93 nationwide.

According to a statement from the ministry, 280 people have been treated for swine flu at hospitals, 59 of which have been treated in intense care units.

Meanwhile, the Health Ministry has informed city health directorates about the country?s vaccination process, which was launched by the ministry as a precautionary step to prevent the further spread of the virus.

?Half of current swine flu patients and one-fifth of its victims are children. The possibility that the virus accelerates lower respiratory disease is high. The best way to protect oneself from this disease is vaccination. Vaccination has been advised by the World Health Organization [WHO] and the European Center for Prevention and Control (ECDC) to protect children from swine flu. The Health Ministry is coordinating Turkey?s vaccination effort. Our state has vaccines and provides them free to the public,? another statement from the ministry on Thursday read, adding that the preventive effect of the vaccine begins two weeks after vaccination.

Furthermore, Health Minister Recep Akdağ pointed out yesterday that there are no vaccines produced in Turkey, during a visit to Novagenix Biyoanalitik, a research and development company operating in the medical industry, and stated that the Health Ministry would be able to produce the vaccine if the necessary agreements are signed with foreign investors. He also noted that in 2010 the government will spend more than TL 300 million on buying vaccines from foreign sources.

All parents received an "urgent" letter asking whether they want their children to be vaccinated at school, with no cost. Standard vaccination consent form with info on side effects etc. Here's the result...

Flu vaccination consent percentages in some of Istanbul's schools range from 3% to 10%. My younger sons school has 600+ students, only 59 said "yes". Older sons school has 1200+ students, about 200 said yes.

zkurmus or Oric, what is the reason so few people in Turkey are willing to vaccination their children against H1N1? Is is lack of understanding of a pandemic? fear of the vaccine? lack of concern because the pandemic is "mild"?

          Thank you for your reply.

            Re: Turkey - H1N1- total deaths - 94

Many fear that the ingredients (adjuvant and mercury) in the batch of vaccines proivded for Turkey will cause serious side effects (the guillam barre syndrome). There's the conspiracy theorists-the government bought too many "bad" vaccines not accepted by the FDA etc and is trying to get rid of them, there's the "vaccines are bad for us, swine flu is mild, noone needs the vaccine" people...

One thing is common is for everyone: utter confusion. Mixed messages in the media, the prime minister announcing that he himself will not get vaccinated...

Even I myself who have been a member of flutrackers since before it was flutrackers have a hard time explaining to people why I choose to vaccinate. After trying to explain to the first 100 or so people, I gave up and now say that this is a personal choice, and with our family health history, we will get vaccinated.

                Re: Turkey - H1N1- total deaths - 94

The vaccine is currently being administered to "high risk groups" (children age 0 - 5, people with underlying health conditions such as asthma, diabetes etc) free of charge in local clinics. All health field related workers have been vaccinated already. All students also get free vaccinations, but the schools have not received the vaccines yet (will arrive within in a week or so). We are all getting the same vaccine - Pandemrix, but the schools' instructions were also unclear about dosage - whether the kids get 1 dose or 2 is not stated.

My mom went to a local clinic in Istanbul on Wednesday, and got her vaccine. They simply asked her why she needed the vaccine, she showed them her health report from a hospital stating what medicine she uses for diabetes etc and that was it - so it seems like they're really not looking very carefully into whether people are high risk or not, because noone is coming in to get vaccinated.

Swine flu rages on as death toll from epidemic reaches 112 across the nation

The Health Ministry announced on Monday that the number of deaths caused by the H1N1 virus, which is widely known as swine flu, has increased and now stands at 112 nationwide.

According to a statement from the ministry, 301 people have been treated for swine flu at hospitals, 59 of whom have been treated in intensive care units. Sixty-three of the swine flu victims thus far had a chronic disease, and two of them were pregnant women, the ministry said.

The ministry once again warned people in high-risk groups, in particular pregnant women, children below the age of 2 and sufferers of chronic diseases, to go to a hospital when they begin to show symptoms of swine flu. ?Those not included in these groups should rest at home when swine flu symptoms emerge, but they should immediately consult a doctor if they have difficulty breathing, chest pain, a fever persisting for more than three days, constant vomiting or somnolence.?

The ministry also said the best precaution to take for those in high-risk groups is to receive a swine flu shot.

Meanwhile, the Samsun deputy provincial health director, Erdin? ?zoğlu, said everyone in Turkey will inevitably encounter the swine flu virus within two years either through the vaccine or through contact as it spreads rapidly. He also stressed that nearly 98 percent of all flu cases in Turkey are swine flu cases. Noting that since symptoms of seasonal influenza and those of H1N1 are almost the same, he said most people do not even notice he or she is suffering from swine flu. ?Swine flu does not affect everyone seriously. The virus can be overcome by eating fresh fruits and resting. So, although there are around 200 patients who are being treated at hospitals, there are most likely thousands of cases,? he said.

The Ministry of Health on Thursday announced that the death toll from swine flu had risen to 161 across the nation, killing 49 in three days.

A total of 243 people across Turkey are receiving treatment at various hospitals. Of these, 70 are in intensive care and 32 are on respirators, the Ministry of Health reported. Among the 161 who died of swine flu, 92 are reported to have had chronic diseases, making them vulnerable to the H1N1 virus.

The report highlighted that the best way to protect against swine flu is vaccination and noted: ?The vaccination of those who have chronic diseases and those who age between 6 months and 24 years of age continues at our health institutions. It is of crucial importance to be sensitive about personal protection measures. Practicing good personal hygiene and washing one's hands often are among the main ways to decrease the possibility of contracting the virus.

Anyone who is sick should not go to work or school, but should instead rest at home.? The report also stressed that people should avoid close contact with others.
