Trenggalek - Public Health (health office) Trenggalek will continue to monitor the health development of pilgrims from the local area for two consecutive weeks after they returned from the Holy Land.

The assurance was conveyed Haji Section Chief Department of Religious Affairs (MORA) Trenggalek, Agus Prayitno, Thursday, when the AFP confirmed the risk of transmission associated with H5N1 virus (bird flu) for Indonesian pilgrims, including Trenggalek pilgrims, during the pilgrimage circuit in the Holy Land, Mecca.

"The rules had always been so. Every person who has fulfilled the five Pillars of Islam get a free health facility for two weeks after returning from the Holy Land," said Agus.

Since their departure, he said, the institute has conducted an intensive medical examination. Medical team that has also given tamiflu drug for prevention.

However, because today the news broke that a number of prospective pilgrims from Indonesia who tested positive for H5N1 virus, Public Health Service Trenggalek back to preparedness, especially when they arrived at the local town.

Trenggalek pilgrims scheduled to arrive in the embarkation Juanda on December 14th at 17:05 pm. And, it is estimated up to the "City of Tempe Crackers" about six hours of scheduled arrival.

"Yes, everything has been prepared by the health office. Jemaah the initial examination is considered as illness or congenital disease will be monitored intensively through health centers in every district," he explained.

Based on the experience of last year, he said, free health care facilities for pilgrims who had just returned from the Holy Land is usually less proactive. That is, these pilgrims are not the majority of these facilities to maximize the medical team came to an intensive clinic to monitor their health progress.

"Such an attitude would harm themselves pilgrims," he said.

The number of candidates from Trenggalek Hajj Affairs as the data Trenggalek 373 people were recorded there. However, not all of them departing from Trenggalek.

Head of Administration of Religious Affairs Trenggalek, M. Abdul Mundir, said that four people had been calhaj origin of mutations to Trenggalek calhaj group Kediri District and as many as three people in Blitar regency one.

Thus, the total calhaj Trenggalek who had come out with the district hall and entered in the list Flying Group (Kloter) 41 recorded 369 people.

Their health condition so far reported good enough. Trenggalek pilgrims certainly also still intact and no one calhaj who reportedly died on the journey and during the Holy Land.

However, their condition is considered not worry. That is, the three declared sick calhaj can still perform despite the five Pillars of Islam must be guided by a number calhajlainnya. "They're still in control of the medical team," he said.

Re: Risk of transmission associated with H5N1 virus (bird flu) for Indonesian pilgrims

The sequences for confirmed H5N1 in birds for 2009 are mostly Egyptian chickens, 1 chicken from India, then 4 wild bird June sequences from Tyva, Russia - black-headed gull, great crested grebe, grebe, & bean goose.

It may be time to clarify where H5N1 is endemic in backyard & commercial poultry, humans, and which wild birds travel through those areas.

Are we sure that there is not a reporting error? H5N1 vs H1N1? Could there be confusion here?

It could or could not be.

There have been 20 cases of Egyptian H5N1 put on file in GenBank so far for 2009 - so Pilgrims (or their chickens) from Egypt could spread H5.

Re: Risk of transmission associated with H5N1 virus (bird flu) for Indonesian pilgrims

In looking at the H5N1 humans sequences from both 2008 and 2009, there seem to be 2 groups of countries.

One is the east European/Middle East group:
Egypt, East Russia (Tyva), UK, Iran, Israel, Ukraine (Black Sea/Mediterranean flyway - except UK)

The other is the South and East Asian group:
East Russia (Primorsky), Japan, HK, China, Thailand, Laos, Bangladesh, Vietnam, India (east Asian/Australasian bird & Central Asian flyways)

It looks like migratory birds could contribute to this grouping, or at least help spread any new combinations.

Hong Kong: black crowned night heron, great egret, grey heron, magpie robin, peregrine falcon, house crow.

            Thailand: brown headed gull

Russia (western): black-headed gull, great crested grebe, grebe, bean goose (all in Tyva - east of Finland)

heres the most current information, i could locate on birds sampled within Egypt during 2007/2008 season

the who and Egypt seem to be delaying the release of samples they have collected

I'm looking out my window now and see common crows, egrets (which showed up last week),rock doves,a falcon, a dozen cats my dog and two sheep and five people.all within a hundred fifty foot area.

I'm not surprised by this report and suspect its factual.I'm surprised and happy that some are making a effort to release more information in a relevant time frame.

Thanks - I'm going to chase down migration maps for all known wild species with H5N1 in 2009 (as I have time).

Re: Risk of transmission associated with H5N1 virus (bird flu) for Indonesian pilgrims

In many Indonesian press reports you can find H1N1 / H5N1 / bird flu / swine flu used freely and mixed up happily.

When you try to understand a report, may be don't focus on words too much, but also look at the context.

The context of this report is the current Hajj in Saudi Arabia, thousands of Indonesians are there now. They will return soon, may be infected with the new H1N1.

That is why health authorities planned extra monitoring of the pilgrims when they come back?

Edit: for me this is about the new H1N1.

                    That's a nice powerpoint.

Looking at the species, I see some that were in Tyva, Russia; others known to be in Hong Kong (not sure they're from Egypt), and 2 that are where I live - both I KNOW winter in and around your part of the globe. I'm sure glad it doesn't spread well from migratory birds.

I think I'll worry most about domestic birds and human H1N1.

Are there many turkeys in Egypt? if so, are they factory or backyard?

                    .

                      .

used to be you could drive down any road outside the city and puchase live ducks chickens and really nice turkeys. pigeons and quail are also sold live.most were raised in the small villages with many being free roaming.

quite a few farm type operations have been set up now.

we just got a really big turkey which was farm raised in one of the small villages.lots of turkeys here.

                        This is what worries me:

If the Egyptian turkeys catch H1N1 as easily as those in Chile, there could be some unpredictable results.
