    Hong Kong: Fatal case of human swine influenza in United Christian Hospital (12/17/09)

    The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

    The spokesperson of United Christian Hospital (UCH) today (December 17) made the following announcement regarding the death of a human swine influenza (HSI) patient:

    A 36-year-old female patient was found collapse in a shopping arcade on December 15 . She was sent to the Accident and Emergency Department of UCH by ambulance, her condition was critical and required resuscitation in the ambulance. She had fever, chest X-ray showed severe pneumonia. She was admitted to Medical and Geriatric ward for further treatment and on ventilation support. The patient's condition continued to deteriorate and was certified dead at 4.12am on December 16.

    Positive result of HSI was confirmed today (December 17).

    The case has been referred to the coroner for necessary follow up. The hospital would like to express condolences to the patient's family.

    The case has been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection.

      Hong Kong: Hospital Authority announces three critical cases of human swine influenza (12/17/09)

      The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

      The Hospital Authority spokesperson today (December 17) announced three new critical cases of human swine influenza (HSI):

      A 57-year-old female patient with good past health developed with flu symptoms since December 10. She attended the Accident and Emergency Department of the Caritas Medical Centre for chest infection and was transferred to Intensive Care Unit for treatment on December 16. Her test result for HSI was confirmed positive on the same day. She was prescribed with Tamiflu and antibiotics. She is now in critical condition and requires ventilation support.

      A 59-year-old male patient with history of hypertension, hyperlipidemia and obstructive sleep apnoea developed flu symptoms on December 13. He attended the Accident and Emergency Department of North District Hospital and was admitted to the isolation ward for further treatment on December 15. Positive result of HSI was confirmed on December 16 and he was prescribed with Tamiflu and antibiotics. His condition deteriorated last night (December 16) and was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit. He is now in critical condition and requires ventilation support.

      Another 57-year-old male patient with history of cardiac disease, diabetes mellitus, hypertension and hyperlipidemia developed flu symptoms on December 11. He attended the Accident and Emergency Department of North District Hospital on December 15 and was admitted to the isolation ward for further treatment. Positive result of HSI was confirmed on 16 December and he was prescribed Tamiflu and antibiotics. His condition deteriorated this morning (December 17) and was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit. He is now in critical condition and requires ventilation support.

      The two hospitals will continue to closely monitor the condition of the three patients. All the cases have been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection.

        Hong Kong: Cleaning arrangements stepped up at LCSD facilities to ensure hygiene (12/18/09)

        The Leisure and Cultural Services Department announced today (December 18) that a lifeguard working at Sha Tin Jockey Club Swimming Pool was confirmed to have been infected with human swine influenza.

        He developed flu symptoms on December 14 and has been on sick leave since that day.

        The department said that the concerned staff member would only resume duties upon full recovery.

        It has also informed staff of the venue about the condition of the concerned staff member and notified the public by posting up notices at the venue.

        The venue is operating as normal.

        Staff have been advised to seek medical consultation if they have any flu symptoms.

        Cleaning and disinfection of the public areas in the venue, the concerned staff member's work areas and commonly touched surfaces have been arranged to prevent the spread of the disease.

          Hong Kong: Hospital Authority announces fatal and critical human swine influenza cases (12/18/09)

          The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

          The Hospital Authority today (December 18) announced a fatal case and a new critical case of human swine influenza (HSI):

          A 24-year-old female patient with good past health developed fever and chest discomfort on December 9. She attended the Accident and Emergency Department of North District Hospital on December 16 and was admitted to the isolation ward for further treatment. Positive result of HSI was confirmed yesterday (December 17) and she was prescribed Tamiflu and antibiotics. With rapid deterioration of her condition the same day, she was transferred to the Cardiac Care Unit and was put on ventilation support. The patient passed away at 7.46pm yesterday. The case will be referred to the coroner for follow-up. The hospital would like to express our condolences to the patient's family. The case has been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection.

          At the same time, a 41-year-old male patient with end-stage renal failure attended the Accident and Emergency Department of Prince of Wales Hospital on December 16 due to fever and cough. He was admitted into the isolation ward and positive result of HSI was confirmed on the same day. Tamiflu and antibiotics were prescribed. His condition deteriorated and he was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit yesterday. He is now in critical condition and requires ventilation support. The hospital will continue to closely monitor his condition.

            Hong Kong: A fatal case of human swine influenza patient at Kwong Wah Hospital (12/19/09)

            The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

            The Kwong Wah Hospital (KWH) spokesman made the following announcement regarding the death of a human swine influenza (HSI) patient today (December 19):

            A 59-year-old female patient with good past health was admitted to KWH for Acute Subarachnoid Haemorrhage with headache on December 7. She was presented with flu symptoms since December 12 and transferred to intensive care unit on December 14. Positive result of HSI was confirmed next day (December 15) and she was prescribed with Tamiflu and antibiotics. Her condition further deteriorated and succumbed this morning.

            The case has been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection. The hospital would like to express its condolences to the deceased's family.

He attended the Accident and Emergency Department of North District Hospital on December 15 and was admitted to the isolation ward for further treatment. Positive result for HSI was confirmed on December 16 and he was prescribed with Tamiflu and antibiotics. His condition deteriorated on December 17 and he was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit and put on ventilation support. The patient succumbed at 12.35pm today (December 21). The hospital expresses its condolences to the patient's family. The case has been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection.

              A 30-year-old female patient with good past health attended the Accident and Emergency Department of Queen Mary Hospital on December 19 due to fever and cough. She was admitted to the isolation ward and prescribed with Tamiflu and antibiotics on the same day. Positive result for HSI was confirmed on December 20. Her condition deteriorated and she was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit today (December 21). She is now in critical condition and requires ventilation support. The hospital will continue to closely monitor her condition.

                A 30-year-old female patient with good past health attended the Accident and Emergency Department of Queen Mary Hospital on December 19 due to fever and cough. She was admitted to isolation ward and prescribed with Tamiflu and antibiotics on the same day. Positive result of HSI was confirmed on December 20. The condition of the patient deteriorated and she was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit on December 21 and requires ventilation support. The patient was certified dead today (December 23) at 1.36pm.

                The hospital would like to express condolences to the patient's family.

                The case was reported to Hospital Authority Head Office and Centre for Health Protection.

                At the same time, a 52-year-old man with end stage renal failure with renal transplant, hypertension and diabetes developed flu symptoms on December 16 and attended the Accident and Emergency Department of Queen Elizabeth Hospital on December 17. He was admitted to isolation ward. Positive result of HSI was confirmed on December 19 and was prescribed with Tamiflu and antibiotics. The condition of the patient deteriorated yesterday (December 22) and he was transferred to the intensive care unit. He is now in critical condition and requires ventilation support.

                The hospital will closely monitor his condition.

                  Hong Kong: HA weekly statistics of Designated Flu Clinics and admitted human swine influenza patients (12/24/09)

                  The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

                  Regarding the services of the eight Designated Flu Clinics (DFCs) and the confirmed human swine influenza patients admitted to public hospitals, the Hospital Authority (HA) today (December 24) provided the following wrap up of the past week:

                  In the past week (December 17 to 23), a total of 1,320 patients with flu-like symptoms attended the DFCs.

                  Among all confirmed human swine influenza patients, 114 confirmed patients are now staying in public hospitals for treatment, with 93 in stable condition, seven in serious and 14 in critical condition.

                  Furthermore, the newly confirmed cases in the past week included 23 staff members of public hospitals (seven male and 16 female, including four doctors, eight nurses, one allied health professional, nine supporting staff and one administrative/clerical staff).

                  So far there were 1,198 HA staff members being confirmed as human swine influenza.

                  Among them, 1,179 have already recovered and returned to work.

                  The HA spokesman reminded members of the public that the eight DFCs run a half-day service from 9am to 1pm during weekends and public holidays, while full-day service (9am to 5pm) is maintained from Mondays to Fridays.

                    Hong Kong: A fatal case of human swine influenza at Tuen Mun Hospital (12/24/09)

                    The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

                    The spokesperson of Tuen Mun Hospital (TMH) made the following announcement today (December 24) regarding the death of a human swine influenza (HSI) patient:

                    A 73-year-old man who was a chronic smoker attended the Accident and Emergency Department of TMH on December 22 due to flu and fever symptoms. His condition was critical. The patient was transferred to Intensive Care Unit for treatment and on ventilation support. The patient's condition continued to deteriorate and succumbed at 7.59pm on the same day (December 22). Positive result of HSI was confirmed yesterday (December 23).

                    The hospital would like to express condolences to the patient's family.

                    The case has been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection.

                      Hong Kong: HA announces critical case of human swine influenza (12/25/09)

                      The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

                      The United Christian Hospital (UCH) spokesperson made the following announcement regarding a new case of critical human swine influenza patient today (December 25):

                      A 49-year-old male patient with history of complicated diabetes mellitus and obstructive sleep apnea attended the Accident and Emergency Department of UCH on December 22 with fever, flu-like symptoms. He had severe chest infection and was admitted to the isolation ward requiring ventilation support. He was prescribed with Tamiflu and antibiotics. His condition deteriorated and was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit on December 23. The diagnosis of Human swine influenza was confirmed on December 24. He is now in critical condition with multi-organ failure.

                      The hospital is closely monitoring his condition.

                        Hong Kong: Fatal case of human swine influenza in Prince of Wales Hospital (12/29/09)

                        The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

                        The spokesperson of Prince of Wales Hospital (PWH) made the following announcement today (December 29) regarding a fatal case of human swine influenza (HSI):

                        An 80-year-old man suffering from diabetes, heart disease and hypertension attended the Accident and Emergency Department of PWH on November 26 due to shortness of breath and cough. He was admitted to the medical ward. HSI was confirmed the next day (November 27) and he was transferred to the isolation ward. Tamiflu and antibiotics were prescribed.

                        The patient condition later improved and was transferred to Shatin Hospital on December 18 for rehabilitation. On December 25 his condition deteriorated again and he was transferred back to PWH for treatment. His condition continued to deteriorate and he finally succumbed on December 27.

                        PWH has been in close communication with the patient's family regarding his condition. The hospital would like to express its deepest condolences to the family.

                        The case has been reported to Hospital Authority Head Office and Centre for Health Protection.
