Suspected swine flu death in Chhattisgarh
Raipur, Aug 13 (IANS)
An 18-year-old man, who returned from Pune last week and had shown common flu like symptoms, has died in a Chhattisgarh hospital. Doctors Thursday said it was yet to be confirmed if the death was caused by swine flu.
"As of now, we are not in a position to either confirm or deny whether it was a case of swine flu death," Vivek Choudhary, superintendent of Dr.Bhimrao Ambedkar Government Medical College and Hospital, told reporters Thursday evening.
"His blood sample had already been sent to Delhi for testing and we are waiting for the report. We are describing his death caused due to cardio pulmonary arrest," he said.
Sitaram Verma, who was working in Pune, returned home in Bemetara in Durg district last week after the Maharashtra city was gripped by the H1N1 virus.
He was first admitted to a hospital at Bhilai town from where he was referred to the Ambedkar Hospital where an emergency swine flu centre has been set up by the state government.
"The patient was admitted to the hospital Aug 12 (Wednesday) but he died while undergoing treatment on the same day," Choudhary said.
Choudhary said 43 blood samples have been sent from his hospital in the past three days for swine flu tests.
"Many of them have voluntarily opted for blood sample profiling as they have travelled outside the state and even the country, particularly in those areas where swine flu cases have been reported," he said.
