Bangalore, Jan 8 (PTI) With five more persons succumbing to swine flu in Karnataka, The statewide death toll due to the disease climbed to 137, health authorities said here today.

"Out of the five swine flu victims, four were from Bangalore and one was from Mysore. All the deaths, which occurred end of last month and earlier this month were reported late," they said.

Among the casualties three were women, they added.

HIN1 death toll mounts to 139 in Karnataka

Bangalore, Jan 13 (PTI) The swine flu toll in Karnataka mounted to 139 with two more deaths reported in the state today, health authorities said.

Two women, aged 40 and 24 years, succumbed to the deadly virus here, sources said.

Sixteen more persons tested positive for the virus -- eight from Bangalore, three from Dharwad, two from Gadag, one each from Belgaum, Mysore and Haveri -- pushing up the number of confirmed cases to 1,869.

Bangalore, Jan 21 (PTI) The death toll due to swine flu climbed to 141 in Karnataka, health officials said today.

"A 21 year-old man and a 16 year-old boy died of H1N1 virus in private hospitals in Bangalore and Gadag respectively earlier this month," the officials said quoting delayed reports

Bangalore, Feb 2 (PTI) With the death of a woman here, the swine flu toll has climbed up to 143 in Karnataka, health officials said.

A 32-year-old woman died of swine flu on January 31 at a private hospital where she was admitted on January 8, they said.

Bangalore, Feb 3 (PTI) The H1N1 influenza toll mounted to 145 in Karnataka with two more persons succumbing to the deadly virus, health officials said.

While a 34 year-old woman died of swine flu in a government hospital here today, a 33 year-old man died in Mysore two days ago, the officials quoting delayed reports said.

Bangalore, Feb 24 (PTI) With one more person succumbing to swine flu here today, the death toll due to the disease in Karnataka rose to 147, health officials said here today.

A 50-year-old woman succumbed to H1N1 virus in a government hospital, they said.

With Bangalore and Udupi reporting one case each today, the total number of confirmed swine flu cases stood at 2,037 in the state, they said.

Bangalore: Unfazed by reports of adverse reactions to H1N1 flu vaccines globally, health workers here are enthusiastically volunteering to receive the first dose of vaccines in the state.
As many as 49,862 government medical staff from across the state have volunteered; all the 29 government medical colleges have come forward too.
On an average, 1,000 medical staff from each of the colleges will participate in the first phase of the ultimate vaccination programme.
Private hospitals are also showing interest. ?Prominent ones, especially those that have been treating flu patients, are our priority, and they themselves are keen. The department has received 1.24 doses of vaccine,? health department officials said.
As a precautionary measure, the vaccine will be administered to medical staff in Community Health Centres (CHC), taluks and district hospitals. ?Since they work within the hospital premises, adverse reactions to the vaccine, if any, can be attended to immediately,? officials said.
Already, 50,000 staff from government hospitals have come forward and nearly 30,000 from medical colleges will participate in the first phase. Doctors say one should clean one?s hands before eating meals to avoid contracting the disease.

Udupi, Apr 28: The swine flu scare that had almost been forgotten has raised its heads again. Two women lost their lives in Manipal Hospital because of H1N1 virus infection, recently.

Neelamma (42) and Renuka (40) from Davangere district died of swine flu. It is learnt that Neelamma died in April 26 while Renuka became a victim of this deadly disease on
April 24.

Both these women had been suffering from high fever since the last two weeks, and were referred to this hospital after treatments given by a local hospital failed to heal them, for advanced treatment. By the time the patients got admitted here, it was too late, it is gathered.

Two H1N1 deaths in state in past 10 days

BANGALORE: Barely two days into the monsoon and the deadly H1N1 has raised its head again. Karnataka has recorded two deaths already.

On Monday, a 58-year-old woman from Bangalore died at a private hospital here after being treated for H1N1 flu for almost a month. A 30-year-old man, admitted to hospital on June 1, died on Monday at a private hospital in Udupi.

According to Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Chest Diseases director Dr Shashidhar Buggi: "Low temperature is favourable for the spread of H1N1 flu. We are also receiving sporadic and isolated flu cases. Early detection and intervention will prevent and control the disease from spreading."

Man dies of A(H1N1)

Udupi: A man died of the Influenza A (H1N1) at the Kasturba Hospital in Manipal on Wednesday.

Sources in the Health and Family Welfare Department told The Hindu that the patient, who was 35 years old, was a resident of Marvanthe village. He had been admitted to Kasturba Hospital a few days ago.

The department had conducted fever surveillance in Marvanthe village and no cases of influenza-like illnesses had been detected there, the sources added.

H1N1 flu returns, claims three lives

After a long gap, the dreaded H1N1 Influenza has returned, claiming the lives of two people in the State. While one person died in Bangalore, the other succumbed in Udupi.


A 34-year-old woman from Chikkaballapur was admitted at a private hospital in the City last
week and died on June 6. She had no morbid condition and was given Tamiflu. Her throat
swab was tested to be positive. The woman died of Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome
(ARDS) and bilateral pneumonia.

Similarly, the 30-year-old man from Chikmagalur was admitted to KMC Hospital, Manipal with cough and high fever. Inspite of taking Tamiflu, his condition worsened and was put on a ventilator. He died on June 9.

According to a Health Department official, around five of the victim?s neighbours were referred to KMC after being suspected of H1N1 Influenza.

Yet another person succumbed to H1N1 at KMC in Manipal on Wednesday. The deceased Abdul Razak (35),a native of Bhatkal, was admitted to KMC in Manipal on June 3 after he developed symptoms of H1N1.

I'm not 100% satisfied that the fatalities reported in #69 and #71 are different.

58/F died private hospital Bangalore Jun 7 and 34/F died at a private hospital Bangalore Jun 6

and

30/M died at a private hospital Udupi June 7 and 30/M died KMC Manipal June 9

could be describing the same cases. Both news reports came out on the same day, June 9, and make no reference to the "other" 2 fatalities.

I will continue to count them as separate cases, but this may be revised with further information.

A year after it struck, H1N1 could strike again

Today, a year after the dreaded H1N1 Influenza first surfaced in Bangalore on June 13, 2009, things seem much calmer. Deccan Herald spoke to some doctors who were in the thick of action during the H1N1 Influenza scare last year in Bangalore to find if the City is safe from the virus.


There may still be cases of H1N1 deaths and people testing positive, but the scale of incidence has significantly come down in the last few months, throwing up a double-barrelled question: was the flu hyped or has the virus become less severe?

Deccan Herald spoke to some doctors who were in the thick of action during the H1N1 Influenza scare last year in Bangalore to find if the City is safe from the virus.

?There was an outbreak last year. The only difference between this and the last influenza outbreaks is that we have a drug now,? said Dr V Ravi, Head of Neuro-virology department, Nimhans.

The Nimhans lab was commissioned to screen throat and nasal swabs of suspected patients after the National Institute of Virology (NIV), Pune, was unable to manage the burden.

The virus attack was felt the most between August and September when the number of deaths escalated. The lab used to receive 100-120 samples a day during these months, with as many as 220 swabs on one particular day. This has now come down to 20-40 a day since December 2009.

According to Dr Ravi, the deaths were more during this time because of the government?s policy to administer Oseltamivir tablets to only those testing positive for the virus. With the policy amended, the drug was administered to even those who showed symptoms of the H1N1 influenza.

Although fewer deaths were occurring now, Dr Ravi doesn?t rule out a second spurt. ?The virus transmission could increase during the rain, as the weather would be conducive. We expect a second spurt. However, neither has the virulency of H1N1 influenza increased nor decreased since last year,? he stated.

He said nothing had changed. Those who did not contract the H1N1 influenza virus are still prone to it, while people who recovered from the flu have developed life-time protection and even if there is another influenza outbreak, they will have ?cross-protection.?

In spite of the recent three deaths in the State, there is apparently no reason to worry.
Dr Vasudev Murthy, state surveillance officer, felt that H1N1 virus was still in the community and it would take at least two years for it to subside. ?We have not received a single positive case since last month. The recent deaths now are sporadic incidences and there is nothing to worry about,? he said.

On an optimistic note, he revealed that an informal study conducted by NIV recently in the western part of Pune found that the attack rate of H1N1 Influenza virus was 30 per cent among youngsters. This was interesting because the attack rate had come down indicating perhaps that the body was developing immunity to the virus.

Dr Raviraj of Lakeside Hospital, which received a huge number of patients in the initial days, said increased awareness was a crucial factor in the reduced death rates. ?The deaths that are reported now are from peripheral areas where awareness might be low,? he said. He suggested that it was better if people took vaccines.

Karkala: Swine Flu Surfaces in Taluk

Karkala, Jun 18: A number of students studying in Morarji Desai Residential School here have been suffering from fever since some time.

During blood tests, it was found that Kishore (12) from Ellare village in the taluk, and Roshan (12) from Shimoga. Both the children are studying in seventh standard of the said school and have been afflicted with H1N1 flu.

They are being treated in the local government hospital.

Bidar woman diagnosed with A(H1N1)

Bidar: A 35-year-old woman from Bidar has been diagnosed with A(H1N1) in Hyderabad.

The woman, who was receiving treatment in Bidar District Hospital, was shifted to a private hospital in Hyderabad on Friday.

After conducting tests on her, doctors in the Hyderabad hospital said that she was suffering from A(H1N1) influenza. Her condition is said to be serious.

?We received the test results on Saturday,? the patient's brother in-law said.

Her family members have been given prophylactic medicines.

Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner and in-charge Chief Executive Officer of the Bidar Zilla Panchayat Sameer Shukla has said he would soon hold a meeting with officials in this regard.
