The virus’s future development would be hard to predict, Dr. Nguyen Huy Nga head of the Preventive Health and Environment Department told the national swine flu conference in Hanoi March 12.
The same day of the conference, the Preventive Health and Environment Department reported that a 25 year old woman was being treated for the virus in Bach Mai hospital in Hanoi. She had fallen sick on March 5.
Five cases, all fatal, were infected with A/H5N1 virus in 2009 nationwide, the conference heard.
In the first three months of this year in Vietnam, there have been four cases of the virus, including a 38-year old woman who died in Mekong Delta province of Tien Giang, said Nga.
Health experts warned that another new stronger virus could emerge from a combination of current strains to cause a new pandemic.
Nga said the steering committee for A/H1/N1 flu prevention needs to step up its monitoring and quarantine activities especially in hotspots in case a new more virulent strain develops.
Residents should not sell, buy or kill poultry without testing first and should never eat poultry that has died of an illness.

Virus H5N1quay Left Vietnam with pathogenic stronger
        March 13, 2010 RFA

Reviews of Health launched today shows that A-H5N1 virus appeared in humans as well as poultry and pathogenic signs of stronger than before.

Dr Le Quynh Mai Dean viruses Central Epidemiological Institute said the latest research institutes and through more than 300 viruses isolated H5N1 influenza A-7 groups detected antigens on this dangerous virus.

Scientists have also found the exchange and integration between the influenza A-H5N1 virus circulating in Vietnam and is the co-evolution of gene segments between the different genes.

This finding shows that the facts just said is the cause of creating a new virus on line poultry in Vietnam from abroad rather than flow.

Dangerous than the past evolution of the virus have higher pathogenic and potentially reduce the effect of influenza treatment. http://www.rfa.org/vietnamese/Vietna...010100212.html

Re: Conference reports new [bird] flu strains

AH5N1 hybrid virus can turn pathogenic stronger

In just over two months of 2010, Vietnam had four patients with influenza A/H5N1, one patient died. Ministry of Health to receive, H5N1 virus has returned with more powerful destructive power.

Dr Le Quynh Mai - Dean Virus (National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology Surgeons) said that the latest research by specialists of the Institute of Epidemiology showed that the isolated more than 300 influenza A/H5N1 virus in poultry and patients in Vietnam, up to at least seven antigens on avian influenza.
Scientists have discovered the exchange and integration between the influenza A/H5N1 virus circulating in our country, as recorded by the evolution of the gene segments of genes between different virus.
This is the reason to create a new virus on line poultry in Vietnam, rather than exotic virus.

Particular, new research has pointed out so fast evolution of influenza A/H5N1 virus and the vaccine is highly pathogenic.
Experts have discovered a number of changes of antigen reduces the sensitivity of influenza treatment.
Dr. Mai concern the increasing trend of change of the pathogenic H5N1 virus will cause danger to public health.

Epidemiology specialists are concerned, may in future will be a new virus, generated from recombinant strains of old.
          .
Dr. Nguyen Huy Nga - Director of Department of Preventive Health and Environment (Ministry of Health) said that the risk of avian influenza outbreak on a strong back is easy to happen, because people in many places, special special population in areas still far from slaughtering and eating infected poultry.

Department of Animal Health said, the country is still six provinces including Ca Mau, Nghe An, Dien Bien, Khanh Hoa, Tuyen Quang and Ha Giang with bird flu has 21 days.
          .
According to Department of Animal Health representative, a few years, not avian influenza outbreak has many strong local subjective in prevention.
Russia received the TS, winter-spring weather favorable for virus development, while Vietnam is at the same time is the existence of influenza A/H1N1 virus, Influenza A/H5N1 in humans, and avian influenza is very easy to make translated into many local spread.

Risk of influenza A/H5N1 service before spreading, the Health Ministry continues to make strong recommendations about preventive measures.
Accordingly, people must be absolutely done cooked food, drink boiling, do not use, contact with infected birds, cleaning their hands after contact with poultry.
Along with that, step up surveillance of avian influenza, prevent trafficking, transport and slaughter poultry not through quarantine.
Yesterday, the Ministry of Health report, Hanoi has a A/H5N1 flu patients. Female patients, aged 25, residing in Phu Ninh commune, Soc Son District. Disease onset 5-3 days 38oC with fever, cough, sore throat, headache, shortness of breath.
7-3 days, the patient to the hospital North Thang Long examination and diagnosis of suspected pneumonia virus. Here, patients were treated antiviral drugs, antibiotics help.

However, 10-3, more severe disease progression, the patient was transferred to Bach Mai Hospital. There are ventilation patients, active treatment at the Faculty of treatment of active - Bach Mai Hospital.
Initial epidemiological investigation showed that from early May 3-2010 far, the area around the patient is sick birds / dead scattered. On 11-3, Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology Surgeons confirmed test results positive for influenza A/H5N1 virus.

Re: Conference reports new [bird] flu strains

WHO reported the following surveillance results for avian influenza A/H5N1:

            Antigenic and genetic characteristics

A nomenclature for phylogenetic relationships among the haemagglutinin (HA) genes of influenza A(H5N1) viruses was devised in consultation with representatives of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, the World Organisation for Animal Health and WHO. This nomenclature is updated when novel genetic clades emerge; the nomenclature can be found at (LINK).

Viruses characterized from 23 September 2009 to 17 February 2010 belonged to the clades listed below.
            • Clade 1 viruses were detected in poultry in Cambodia. Genetic characterization of these viruses showed that they were closely related to clade 1 viruses previously circulating in the country (Fig. 1). No antigenic data are available.
            • Clade 2.2 viruses were detected in poultry in Nepal. Genetically these viruses were very similar to viruses previously detected in the region (Fig. 1). No antigenic data are available.
            • Clade 2.2.1 viruses continue to circulate in poultry in Egypt; there is sporadic transmission to humans. Viruses isolated during this period were genetically similar to those isolated during 2008 and 2009 (Fig. 1). Data are not available on the antigenic properties of the recent poultry viruses, but isolates from humans are antigenically similar to the clade 2.2.1 reference vaccine virus A/Egypt/321/2007 (Table 2) as measured by haemagglutination inhibition.
            • Clade 2.3.2 viruses were detected in wild birds in China, Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (Hong Kong SAR); in the Russian Federation; and in poultry in Nepal and Viet Nam. These viruses were genetically similar to clade 2.3.2 viruses isolated in previous years (Fig. 1). Antigenically, the virus from Hong Kong SAR reacted to antiserum to the clade 2.3.2 reference vaccine virus A/Common Magpie/Hong Kong/5052/2007, albeit with reduced haemagglutination inhibition titres when compared with the homologous antigen (data not shown).
            • Clade 2.3.4 viruses were detected in poultry in Viet Nam. These viruses formed 2 distinct genetic subclades within the 2.3.4 clade (Fig. 1). Viruses from 1 of these subclades reacted well to postinfection ferret antiserum raised against the reference vaccine virus A/Anhui/1/2005 (data not shown); antigenic data are not available for the other subclade.
