  • Ukraine: Questionable reports of countrywide outbreak of "unknown enterovirus"

This is extremely bizarre. This may also represent out of season spread of H1N1.

    In Ukraine rampant dangerous enterovirus

Doctors claim that the new unknown infection can undermine the health of thousands of Ukrainians
    16.08.2010 12:47 16/08/2010 12:47

The tragedy at the boarding school for children with diseases of the central nervous system in the beautiful ancient city uncovered what infectiologists said in the past few weeks, but were not heard. Doctors say that Ukraine is rampant dangerous virus, which risks undermining the health of many thousands of Ukrainian citizens .

In the infectious wards significantly the cases of treatment of patients with "strange symptoms - a sharp rise in body temperature on the background of general well-being, the magazine writes IMC .

"Patients do not pereohlazhdaltis do not take unusual food did not change the way of life, some of them not to leave Kiev, but zatemperaturili sharply - up to 39-40 degrees, followed by rash," - told an infectious diseases doctor CCH N 4 Kiev Eugene Menzhulina .

. "Clinically, the disease can be differentiated from allergic reaction, but the data history, as well as existing detention allergists say that the rash and temperature - not allergic genesis. In other words, people who have the viral infection rather than an abnormal reaction to the heat. Our compatriots often travel to the Crimea, Egypt, Turkey, and other hot countries and does not suffer a similar, although the air temperature and solar activity there can not be compared with the Kiev ", - underlined the doctor.

Sources in the Ministry of Health on condition of anonymity confirmed the words of medical practitioners and immediately make it clear: "Set dangerous diagnoses of doctors do not recommend" . The picture is very similar to the events in Moscow, where official statistics, for example, deaths from "unknown virus" or "heat stroke" in the Russian capital 10-15 times differed from the informal only because the doctors were not allowed to make findings of pathologists in the true causes of death.

All this gives reason to believe that the events in Nezhin boarding school, where had been hospitalized about 25 children (out of 57), and where five inmates have been killed - this is just the tip of the iceberg and a very eloquent picture what is happening across the country. Symptoms of children from Nezhin presented in the official press release of the Ministry of Health (the situation in the beautiful ancient city), coincide with the symptoms, which fix the doctors in other clinics and to other patients - not connected with the events in the Chernigov region.

However, the Ministry of Health officially denies the problem and did not consider it in any way worthwhile. Hence - the lack of diagnostic tools and the necessary medicines in hospitals.

Doctors even in Kiev clinics operate blindly and rely mainly on family budgets patients. "Relying on this issue to ensure through the Ministry of Health, unfortunately, does not account for" - claim workers infectious offices of the capital.

Recall, from 7 to 11 August in Chernigov in Nezhin boarding died four children and one adult . According to preliminary data, they had an unknown viral infection with exanthema (rash), differentiated from herpes.

It is also possible that this is referring to adenovirus or rhinovirus or other out of season pathogen, as we have seen around the world.

Don't worry. Ukrainians should not be afraid of the ferocious enterovirus

      16.08.10 16:04 16/08/1910 16:04

Director of the Kiev Center of Clinical Immunology, Oleg Nazarov urged Ukrainians not to panic about rumors ran rampant in Ukraine unknown enterovirus .

"Panicking does not need perfect. And before we talk about some obscure virus, they must first identify, define, and this, believe me, very long "song" - in particular, he said, adding: "We have every spring-summer and autumn are marked outbreak of infections - an enterovirus, or "rotovirusnyh. Healthy people are absolutely nothing to fear, and patients usually "protect" doctors " . Therefore, anything other than vitamins, I would not advise you, "wrote ForUm .

Speaking about the situation in Nezhin boarding, Nazar said: "Any viral infection can potentially cause mucosal edema and swelling of the central nervous system, especially in children with cerebral palsy. These patients initially nervous system is weakened, so any inflammatory process may grant such a picture. In Nezhinsky boarding at the clinic is more like a normal or rotovirusnuyu enterovirus infection, although I'm not going to argue about "unknown virus".

Ukraine raging enteroviruses - unofficial figures

. In Ukraine raging dangerous enteroviruses, which risks undermining the health of many thousands of Ukrainian citizens. Tragedy at the boarding school for children with diseases of the central nervous system Nezhine revealed what doctors said infectious disease over the past few weeks, but remained not heard.

In infectious hospitals significantly increased cases of treatment of patients with "strange symptoms - sudden fever against the background of the general welfare. "Patients do not pereoholodzhuvatysya not have unusual food did not change the way of life, some even Kyiv not leave, but zatemperaturyly sharply - up to 39-40 degrees, followed by a rash on the skin" - says infection doctor GKB № 4 Kyiv Eugene Menzhulina, says IMC .

"Clinically disease can be differentiated from allergic reactions, but the data history, and available conclusion alerholohiv say that the rash and fever - not allergic genesis. . In other words, people place a viral infection rather than a reaction to abnormal heat. Our fellow citizens often go to the Crimea, Egypt, Turkey and other warm countries and does not suffer a similar, although the air temperature and sun activity there - not in sample Kiev ", - said the doctor.

Sources in the Ministry of Health under the anonymity of speech and practicing doctors confirm it clear here: "set a dangerous diagnoses doctors do not recommend. The picture is very reminiscent of the Moscow event, when the official statistics, for example, deaths from "unknown virus" or "heat stroke" in the Russian capital 10-15 times differ from the unofficial only because doctors were not allowed to make conclusions pathologists real causes of death.

All this suggests that events in Nezhin school, where already about 25 hospitalized children (from 57), and where five inmates have died - is only the tip of the iceberg and most eloquent picture of what is happening across the country. Symptoms of children with Nizhyn submitted in an official press release the Ministry of Health (on the situation Nezhine) overlap with symptoms that capture the doctors in other clinics and patients about the other - not related to the events in the Chernihiv region.

However, the MOH officially vidhreschuyetsya problems and does not consider it anything like deserves attention. Hence - the lack of diagnostic tools and essential drugs in hospitals.

Doctors even in Kiev clinics are blind and rely mainly on family budgets patients. "Hang on this issue to ensure the Ministry of Health, unfortunately, have not" - said the workers infectious units of the capital.

Eurosurveillance.org reported last week outbreaks of enterovirus aseptic meningitis in Novi Sad (Vojvodina, Serbia) (see http://www.flutrackers.com/forum/sho...d.php?t=150966 ) and in Latvia (Echovirus and Coxsackievirus) (see http://www.flutrackers.com/forum/sho...d.php?t=150965 ).

Re: Ukraine: Questionable reports of countrywide outbreak of "unknown enterovirus"

It is clear that something is going on here, but far from clear what. The picture given in these broader articles is that of fever and rash. This is similar to the original depiction given in the undiagnosed outbreak at the boarding school, but that description has largely vanished and that outbreak is now being described as ARVI, and is looking increasingly like H1N1.

Post #4 raises the possiblity that this is heat stroke.

None of this looks very much like meningitis. I have no idea why enterovirus, of all things, is mentioned here.

Re: Ukraine: Questionable reports of countrywide outbreak of "unknown enterovirus"

This is the wikipedia article on heatstroke - notably fever and rash are mentioned as prominent symptoms.

With respect to the mess at the orphanage, while the ARVI is undiagnosed, the fatalities are suspected to be the result of hyperthermia, and not respiratory failure. There is some suspicion ("the heat could kill the healthy, not only the sick" - from that thread) that the fatalities may only be distantly related to the ARVI.

It is possible that an outbreak of hand, foot and mouth disease is currently spreading; some of the symptoms includes rash, malaise, sore throat, high fever, as specified in EuroSurveillance.org reports mentioned. Also, at Hong Kong these viruses (Echovirus, Enterovirus, especially EV-71) have been striken hard this year.

Re: Ukraine: Questionable reports of countrywide outbreak of "unknown enterovirus" - DENIED

As I suspected, this was press sensationalism, and the official was misquoted. The illness that apepars widespread in Ukraine is likely due to heat, although there is mention of an increase in ARVI.

Still no indication of whether the fatalities in the orphanage are simply due to heat (during a possible ARVI outbreak) or actually due to ARVI (and if so, which agent is responsible).

Ukrainians are afraid of a new virus

After the poisoning of children in the Nizhin rumors about the mysterious disease. In Nezhin tragedy - a new twist. After the mysterious deaths of five inmates of a local orphanage, who have sharply fever, there were rumors that the country runs a dangerous enterovirus, which massively decimated Ukrainians. Allegedly, people are admitted to hospital with fever and a strange rash on her body. However, some doctors say it is not an allergy. "Patients do not supercool, do not eat unusual food, did not change the lifestyle, but zatemperaturili sharply - up to 39-40 degrees, followed by rash" - lead media quoted an infectious diseases doctor Kiev hospital № 4 Eugenia Menzhulin. However, in comments "Today," Ms. Menzhulina different accents: "The press has interpreted my words. We've got sick with fever and a rash, but I'm not saying that this is some weird virus. We analyze and quickly determine that it is. The reason may be banal. Supervisor Menzhulin, Head Office infectious Ludmila Volevach, also said "Today" that patients with a mysterious virus, they do not: "Simply, there are people that temperature due to the fact that eating something substandard.

Doctors rumors about a strange virus is associated with deaths in the beautiful ancient city. "Raised a fuss after the event in the beautiful ancient city, - the main immunologist Kiev Oleg Nazarov. - In Kiev outbreaks of mysterious diseases no! Red spots on the skin may occur due to vascular dilatation caused by an abrupt change in temperature. For a hot street people come to office with air conditioning, drink cold. Because of that this summer more than in the past year, cases of [ARVI].
