    Houseful: Bangalore hospitals

All is not well on the health front. A visit to the city hospitals reveals a scary situation.

While BBMP officials may quote their figures of dengue, H1N1 and chikungunya in the city, doctors say that with a heavy rush of patients suffering from suspected dengue and H1N1 cases, hospitals are not able to meet their demands.

?After many years, we are facing a situation like this,? said Dr Sudarshan Ballel, medical director, Manipal Hospital.

?With a large number of suspected dengue and H1N1 cases pouring in each day, the hospital is full. We feel bad to say no to patients. But we are helpless. Almost all the beds starting from the general ward to the super deluxe rooms are filled,? he said.

There has been widespread awareness about these diseases among the people and realising its grave consequences, people are keen on getting admitted and treated in hospitals. Unfortunately, the number of hospital beds available in the city is not enough to meet the demand this season.

?My husband has fever for over three days. Blood test has indicated viral infection. We took him to a nearby hospital. But all the beds were full, so the doctor told us to treat him at home,? said Kamini B of Rustam Bagh.

        Don?t spread rumours, says DHO
Rahul Belagali, Chikkaballapur, September 4,, DHNS:

The H1N1 disease which is fast spreading in the State has taken many lives in the State and the scare of Swine Flu has also spread to Chikkaballapur district.

Many have complained of having symptoms similar to the Swine Flu. Besides, there are rumours that three have died of the flu in the district.

But what is worrying the doctors here is the spread of false rumour about the disease.
Speaking to the Deccan Herald, the District Health Officer Dr Bhaira Reddy said, ?One must not jump to any conclusion, but wait for the medical report.?

He further said that a person might have complaints like bodypain, cold and fever but the case might not necessarily be Swine Flu. It is not possible to treat all the health complaints with a similar method, Dr Reddy added.

        Reports to be considered

The swab tests are conducted on the suspected patients and the reports are sent to the Nimhans. ?Only the confirmed reports should be taken into consideration,? Dr Reddy observed.

He has issued strict instructions to the health department personnel from going public about the H1N1 cases. Besides, the department has taken up various awareness programmes.

?We have told the doctors not to confirm the case until they have confirmation from the labs,? he added.

When asked about the three suspected cases, he said the swab tests have been sent to the Nimhans and until the reports arrive, nothing can be confirmed, he added.

        Swine flu deaths in Karnataka

As many as 16,228 suspected cases of H1N1 have been reported till August 30 in the State, of which, 3,633 cases were confirmed. Among these persons, some have been recovered, others are still in under treatment. Two women (40) of Mysore and Bangalore died of H1N1 on August 30, Dr Reddy added.

The H1N1 disease which is fast spreading in the State has taken many lives in the State and the scare of Swine Flu has also spread to Chikkaballapur district.

No takers for surgical masks in Bangalore this year despite H1N1 cases

Bangalore saw a boom in the sale of surgical masks in September last year as the news of swine flu outbreak spread across the city, with some of the medical stores selling about 500 masks a day.

This year, even though the number of people affected by the disease has not come down, there is hardly any demand for the masks, say sources in the pharmacies.

?Last year, around this time, there was a mad rush for the masks. We used to get bulk orders from many schools and other firms. But this time, we have sold only less than 100 masks so far,? said G Rajendra Prasad, managing partner of Cash Pharmacy.

However, statistics available with the government show that the number of patients affected by H1N1 virus has not decreased. While about 1,440 swine flu cases were reported from the city last year, 1,378 cases have been reported till August this year.

?Last year, even healthy people used to buy masks. But now, I think they are less worried about the disease,? said Ragavendra R, owner of a medical shop.

Dr Sashidhar Buggi, director of Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Chest Diseases said, ?Bangaloreans have realised that there is no point in panicking. Anyway, the surgical mask will not prevent swine flu.

Only N95 masks can stop the virus from affecting you. Moreover, many precautionary measures like vaccines are available in the market now.?

Health dept adopts casual approach even after 206 test positive
Five die of H1N1 in one week
            Bangalore, Sept 6, DHNS

Five persons have died of the dreaded H1N1 Influenza in the past one week, four of them in Bangalore, but the State?s Department of Health apparently sounds very casual about the health situation in the State.

According to the State Surveillance Unit (SSU), four persons have died in different private hospitals in Bangalore and one person in Mysore.

It is not just a spurt in the number of deaths, but there have been 206 fresh positive cases of H1N1 Influenza since August 31. On September 1, out of the 190 cases tested, 65 cases tested positive for the dreaded influenza.

Although the number of positive cases has increased, the Health department has stopped the weekly publishing details of number of deaths and positive cases which it was doing earlier. When Dr Chalavaraj, Joint Director, Communicable Diseases, was questioned, he simply denied the allegation. ?I am not aware about what details are being sent, I will instruct the department concerned to send the updates,? he said.

Explaining the increase in the number of positive cases, Dr V Ravi, head of Neurovirology department at Nimhans, who is in charge of testing the throat swabs at the lab, said the virus tended to get virulent during the season. Adequate measures have been taken to treat patients with symptoms of H1N1 Influenza, said Health Commissioner D N Nayak.

This year alone, 100 people have died and since the first attack last year, 235 persons have succumbed till date. There have been 3,874 positive cases in the State so far
            .

Check spread of dengue: HC to State

The High Court has directed the State Government to address the outbreak of dengue and chikungunya in the State on war footing.

Hearing a petition by Chandrakala Manjunatha seeking to prevent the spread of dengue the Division Bench comprising Chief Justice J S Khehar and Justice Manjula Chellur directed the state to furnish details regarding the spread of the disease and steps taken
to prevent it to the petitioners on weekly basis.

The Bench also directed the appointment of officers to gather district-wise report. ?Such update shall be made available to the petitioner?s advocate for eight weeks,? the Bench said. The petitioner has been given the liberty to approach the Court, if the steps taken are not satisfactory.

Five persons have died of the dreaded H1N1 Influenza in the past one week, four of them in Bangalore, but the States Department of Health apparently sounds very casual about the health situation in the State.

The official count of fatalities in the entire State of Karnataka is 237, flutrackers has tracked 240 and these two make 242. The count of 246 in the city of Bangalore alone is incorrect, and is more likely the latest count for the state. There have been 13 officially reported fatalities in September including two which occurred in Maharashtra.

State Sees 50 Deaths, 1,596 Confirmed Cases In 2 Months

It may not be grabbing headlines anymore but that does not mean it?s no longer a threat to our health. With 50 deaths registered in Karnataka in 57 days, the deadly H1N1 virus is still much a cause of concern.

According to the ministry of health and family welfare website, there were 50 deaths and 1,596 laboratory?confirmed cases in the state between August 1 to September 26. In all, 248 deaths and 4,295 laboratory?confirmed cases have been registered since May 2009.

What makes it more alarming is the fact that one?fourth of the total cases have been recorded in the past three months. For instance, the total cases confirmed in India is 44,350, with 2,520 deaths. Of these, 12,407 cases were detected and 989 deaths occurred since June 2010. Many of the victims belong to the productive age group.

Karnataka has the second largest number of cases. The trend of cases in Bangalore is same as that in Chennai, Hyderabad and Vellore. "During the summers there are fewer cases. Monsoon and winter ? seasons for influenza ? see an increase," said Prajakt J Barde, assistant medical director, Serum Institute of India Ltd, Pune.
