Health of Ukraine provides information on the situation in the orphanage for children with central nervous system in Nizhyn Chernihiv region.

Recall that in the orphanages from 07.08 to 11.08.2010 was registered five deaths of inmates of central nervous system lesions, which were dependent on this institution. All children died directly at home. Age dead - from 10 to 19 years.

This information about the threatening situation that prevailed in Nezhin Orphanage, located in the Ministry of Labour and Social Policy of Ukraine Ministry of Health of Ukraine Received August 11, 2010 at 18:00 from the Department of Health Chernihiv regional state administration.

Immediately after this message on behalf of the Minister of Health Zinoviya publican went to the scene, Deputy Minister Raisa monopoly with major freelance specialist in pediatric anesthesiology MH Vladimir Zhovnir to assess the situation and provide necessary assistance.

At that time, patients who were in boarding houses were inspected 11/08/1910 specialists of the Ministry and Health Department and sent to hospital Nizhyn hospital. By August 13, 2010 in boarding houses and Nezhinsky City Hospital was the Deputy Minister Raisa Mostovenko. She studied previous reports, the autopsy dead 11/08/2010, personally inspected all school pupils hospitalized patients: three of which were in the resuscitation and 12 - in infectious department. Studied the history of the disease, treatment corrected. Established that the 1-child serious condition, diagnosis: pneumonia, Raman, SS; in 2 children the diagnosis: pneumonia, moderate condition; in 2 children diagnosed: bronchoobstructive syndrome in the remaining 10 children diagnosed: acute respiratory viral infection.

As of August 16, 2010 in the intensive care department Nizhyn hospital found two more children in a state of positive growth, close to satisfactory. In the infectious department remained 11 patients. Before boarding house six inmates transferred in satisfactory condition.

As of 25/08/2010 year all students who were treated at Nezhinsky TSML issued [discharges] in satisfactory condition.

According to the Central Sanitary-Epidemiological Station of Health of Ukraine results of analysis of breath-, Astro-and noro virus and influenza virus type A, B, influenza type A (H1N1) pandemic in children boarding negative, results of sectional material (kishkivnyka pieces) of 3 students this school ELISA for the presence rotavirusu - in 2-negative students, and in one - positive. Also, a contamination of sensitive crops to identify enteroviruses including poliovirusiv. Investigation continues.

Currently, the boarding house is a constant medical monitoring of pediatrician and infectious disease.

The question remains under control of the Minister of Health of Ukraine.

It seems that after three weeks, the Ukrainian Ministry of Health has
determined that the cause of this outbreak was an undetermined acute
respiratory infection, and that all the remaining children have
recovered and been discharged. The only specific respiratory virus
they seem to have excluded is influenza virus.

Oddly, they seem to have tested for an excluded a bunch of [unlikely]
agents, including norovirus, poliovirus , smallpox virus, and
rotovirus, but no other respiratory agents, and no bacteria
whatsoever despite the apparent response to treatment.

[Fortunately this outbreak appears to have been contained. On the
basis of the clinical evidence released so far it would be
unrealistic to suggest a specific etiology. Further information is
awaited. If a respiratory infection is indeed the cause of the
outbreak, an agent such as respiratory syncytial virus, causing a
normally benign infection, can be lethal in an institutionalized setting.
