    Week 35: No Activity

ILI activity increased, with the largest increases observed in two practices.

ILI Activity Status (HHS Region 4 ILI baseline is 2.0%*): Below baseline in the Upstate (.21%) and Midlands (.51%). Above baseline along the Coast (3.67%). The state ILI percentage was .90%. This compares to 6.02% during this time last year.
Note: Fewer ILINet providers report during the summer.

SC Viral Isolate and RT-PCR Activity: During the past MMWR (35) week, no positive specimens were reported. Since October 4, 2009, 549 specimens tested by our Bureau of Labs (BOL) have been positive for influenza. A total of 368 positive specimens have been reported by other labs. All subtyped influenza A viruses this season have been 2009 H1N1. Five influenza B specimens have been identified this season.
Positive Rapid Flu Test Activity: Three positive tests (1 inf A and 2 inf B) were reported.

Hospitalizations: One influenza associated hospitalization was reported.

...The trends observed in SC were similar to those seen nationally. More than 74% of specimens tested by WHO and NREVSS labs were 2009 H1N1. Another 25% were influenza A viruses that were either unsubtyped or unsubtypeable. Less than 0.5% of positive specimens were seasonal H1N1, H3N2, and B...

Sentinel providers reported 318,341 total patient visits. 5,306 of these visits were for ILI. Of these, 1,061 reports were in 0-4 yr olds, 3,048 in 5-24 yr olds, 859 in 25-49 yr olds, 281 in 50-64 yr olds and 57 in individuals older than 64 yrs...

The number of weekly influenza hospitalizations peaked at 103 during the first week of the season. Figure 9 shows the distribution of hospitalizations and deaths by MMWR week. The 0-4 year old age group had the highest hospitalization rate (78.21), followed by 5-18 year olds (22.49)...

Another 26% of deaths occurred in adults age 25-49. The death case rate was highest (2.67) in the 50-64 age group. The 0-4 age group had the second highest case rate (1.65).
