Flu cases lead to restrictions at Moses Cone facilities

GREENSBORO -- A spike in cases of flu and stomach flu in Guilford County Schools has prompted Moses Cone Health System to restrict visitation.
Effective Thursday, Cone temporarily suspended visits by children 18 and under. Officials said the measure was aimed at preventing the spread of the viruses to patients.
Officials said Cone facilities were treating four times as many people for the flu as they did in December and cases of the highly contagious gastrointestinal Norovirus were also on the rise. But the suspension came in reaction to what was happening in local schools.
"We've been informed that the absenteeism rate in our public schools is quite high and this is due to the flu-like symptoms and the stomach flu symptoms that we have in our schools and community," said Dr. Mary Jo Cagle, Cone's chief quality officer.
