Diarrhea outbreak declared in Isabela City

THE health office in Isabela City, the capital of Basilan province, has launched an advocacy to contain cases of diarrhea, as an outbreak has been declared recently in the city.

Isabela City Health Officer Dr. Rafael Cabug said they initially recorded minimal incidence of diarrhea since February 6, and it suddenly surged to 213 cases since last week until Thursday.

He said the patients are from the 24 of the 45 villages of Isabela City.

However, Cabug said that no diarrhea-related mortality was recorded by his office despite the high incidence...

At least 17 members of the indigenous Pala'wan community from Barangay Culandanum in Bataraza town in Palawan province are feared dead after a diarrhea outbreak in the area, a local health official said Monday.

Provincial health officer Dr. Ed Cruz told GMA News Online that the victims were reported to have died and more are believed to be suffering from diarrhea due to polluted water. No official count has been released by the municipal health office of Bataraza and a health team is on its way to the site, he said...

PALAWAN (UPDATED) ? Fifteen people, mostly children, died while five others were hospitalized due to a diarrhea outbreak in a mountainous barangay in Bataraza town in Palawan, health officials said.

Bataraza Municipal Health Officer Dr. Jose Mabutas identified the fatalities as Aromina Cangan, 24; Jesulina Cangan, 1; Nursadin Enyong, 2; Belina Enyong, 3, Esradi Enyong, 4; Jun Enyon, 2; and, Kolap Enyong, 3.

The others who died in the outbreak are: Anabon Das, 50; Toto Kondong, 3; Norlito Kondong, 3; Nolina Kondong, 4; Tito Sibuto, 15; Tulina Busnal, 15; Toto Limato, 2; and, Nena Limato, 3, all residents of Sitio Apad-Apad, Barangay Culandanum.

Palawan Health Officer Dr. Edwardo Cruz, in a phone interview, confirmed that the 15 victims died of dehydration due to severe diarrhea from March 17 up to the present.

?Our local health official in Batarasa Dr. Louie Ocampo and his medical team were conducting water sampling since the initial findings from the fecal samples of the 5 patients in RTN Hospital were found positive for amoeba,? Cruz said.

Meanwhile, Cruz immediately ordered an information dissemination on the neighbouring barangays and preventive measures to counteract the outbreak.

?We already distributed medicines and water anti-bacterial solutions to the residents near the area to prevent the spread of the outbreak,? Cruz said

Provincial Health Specialist Dr. Louie Ocampo, in a separate interview, said they were only informed of the incident a few days ago.

?We were also surprised upon learning the outbreak the other day. If we were informed earlier, we could have acted at once and prevented the numerous deaths,? Ocampo said.

Batarasa town is around 225 kms away from Puerto Princesa City in Palawan.

Palawan diarrhea outbreak worsens; DOH orders deeper probe

Amid reports that more victims were feared dead in a diarrhea outbreak that hit parts of Palawan province, the Health Department has ordered a deeper investigation into the incident.

On Tuesday, Health Secretary Enrique Ona said he wants a comprehensive mapping of the areas where the outbreak occurred, and testing of the water there.

"I just received an initial report from the health office in Palawan Monday night. We are comprehensively looking into the water source as a possible cause of the outbreak," Ona said in an interview on dzRH radio.

On Monday, initial radio reports indicated the outbreak occurred in Culandanum village in Bataraza town ? a remote area in southern Palawan.

It said at least 16 people were feared dead in the outbreak.

But on Tuesday, a report by dzBB's Palawan affiliate cited information that the death toll could go up to 49, with diarrhea cases reported in more areas...

Diarrhea death toll in Palawan rises to 23

MANILA, Philippines - The death toll in the diarrhea outbreak in Palawan has climbed to 23, a regional police spokesman said today.

A radio report quoting Superintendent Gregorio Olaguer, spokesman of the Mimaropa regional police office, said the three additional fatalities were residents of Barangay Panalingaan, Rizal town.

Olaguer said that according to government doctors, the three victims suffered severe diarrhea after drinking contaminated water...

NDRRMC names 15 of 20 'confirmed' diarrhea fatalities in Palawan

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council has named at least 15 of 20 Palawan residents who died in a diarrhea outbreak that it said started as early as March 1.

In a report posted on its website Thursday night, the NDRRMC also said the diarrhea cases in Bataraza town is still increasing, with victims aged between seven months and 85 years...

8 feared dead in new diarrhea outbreak in Palawan

At least eight people were feared dead in a new diarrhea outbreak in an area in Palawan province, barely a month after the same epidemic in a neighboring town was believed contained.

The Palawan Provincial Health Office has sent a team to Latud village in Rizal town to verify the reported deaths, radio dzBB's Palawan affiliate reported Tuesday.

Local police and military authorities were on standby to provide assistance if needed, the report said.

Only last Monday, health authorities said they are coordinating with the Local Water Utilities Administration to prevent the spread of the disease following the deaths of at least 20 members of an indigenous tribe in Bataraza town.

National Epidemiology Center head Dr. Eric Tayag said Monday that while the situation in Bataraza town has ?stabilized" for the moment, they want to make sure the diarrhea outbreak does not spread to other towns.

Tayag said they are keeping watch over Rizal town in Palawan, a neighboring town of Bataraza where the deaths occurred.

DoH team flies to Palawan village to check on increasing diarrhea cases

A Provincial Health Office Medical team flew this Tuesday to a remote area in Palawan to confirm the number of diarrhea cases and treat them, an official from the Department of Health told Radyo Inquirer.

Dr. Romeo Ocampo , chief of Planning, Monitoring and Surveillance, said that medical team was on its way via helicopter to Rizal.

?Our medical team is now on its way to Rizal via helicopter. The only easy way to get there is through a helicopter because if we travel by land, it will take us five-hours to get to the municipality, another two hours to the villages and a five-hour walk to get inside the mountainous part.? Ocampo said speaking in Filipino.

?The number of fatalities in the Municipality of Batarasa is still going up but there were no additional deaths as of today,? Ocampo said.

Water samples from Batarasa River were confirmed to be positive for fecal contamination, Ocampo said.

The chances of contamination in these areas are very high because the residents do all their daily activities in the rivers, including bathing and getting water for food and drink, said Ocampo.

Manila: Eight more tribesmen reportedly died of diarrhoea, raising the death toll in the remote mountainous village of tribesmen in Palawan province, southwest Philippines, to 28, a radio report said.

The number of the latest fatalities will be confirmed by a medical team sent to Latud village, in Rizal town, which neighbours the town of Bataraza, said Dr Eric Tayag, head of the National Epidemiology Centre.

"Some residents of Bataraza may have spread diarrhoea [to] Latud [village]..."

MANILA, Philippines ? Health officials have declared a cholera outbreak in Bataraza town in Palawan following the death of at least 30 people, mostly children belonging to a tribe, as a result of contact with water believed to be contaminated.

The outbreak was officially declared on Tuesday after the Department of Health (DoH) recorded an ?unusually high? number of diarrhea cases in 17 out of the 22 villages of Bataraza caused by drinking contaminated water, said Dr. Manuel Mapue, of the DOH National Epidemiology Center-Applied Public Health Division...

Diarrhea claims 29 lives in Rizal, new cases noted

PUERTO PRINCESA CITY, 24 May (PIA) --- With the diarrhea outbreak in Bataraza town controlled early this month, the disease is far from over in the town of Rizal which has already claimed 29 lives since February in 10 villages.

This was confirmed recently by Dr. Peter Curameng of DOH-Palawan in a recent meeting of the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council-Technical Working Group.

He said that new cholera cases are still reported in Rizal town and hundreds are under treatment. ?The situation in Rizal is worse than what happened in Bataraza,? Dr. Curameng said.

Those affected are members of the indigenous people (IPs) called Pala?wan who live up the mountains accessible only after 4-6 hour walk from the barangay proper.

The DOH and the Provincial Health Office with the Health team of the PDRRMC conducted medical intervention to assist the Municipal Health Office and set up a Satellite Health Center in Barangay Latud. A mobile medical team hiked to the IPs communities to treat the sick, dispense medicines and aquatabs, bring relief goods, and teach them basic sanitation.

The Satellite Health Center will stay in the area until the situation is controlled. At present, the PDRRMC Health team with the DOH is closely monitoring the situation and assisting in treatment of the patients.

Dr. Curameng also revealed that water samples taken from the areas are positive for aeromonas caviae and aeromonas hydrophila. He said that the presence of aeromonas indicates the severity of pollution and contamination of the water sources.

Packs of chlorine and water purifying tablets are being distributed to the barangays to ensure safe drinking water. According to Curameng, aeromonas bacteria are not killed by boiling but through chlorination. Barangay health workers and other volunteer community workers are being taught how to chlorinate water.

He strongly recommends the setting up of a Municipal Epidemiological Surveillance Unit or the MESU in Rizal town. He said that there was already a provincial resolution years ago that institutionalizes the MESU but only few municipalities are complying with the resolution. (vsmendoza/pia-palawan)

188 downed by diarrhea in Basilan capital

ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines ? A new outbreak of diarrhea has stricken 188 people in Isabela City in Basilan from May 1 to 23, the city?s health officer said.

Dr. Rafael Cabug said that 164 of those stricken were hospitalized while the rest received treatment as outpatients.

It was the second diarrhea outbreak in Isabela City.

In March, 180 people were hospitalized in a week?s time. Two of the patients later died.

Bulacan village under state of calamity

BARANGAY Meysulao in Calumpit town, Bulacan was placed under state of calamity Tuesday morning after the number of people, mostly children, reportedly suffered from food poisoning climbed to 200 as of Tuesday.


The victims, who all came from a birthday party of a two-year-old boy from Barangay Meysulao on Sunday, suffered stomach and chest pains, diarrhea, and vomiting.


According to Calumpit municipal administrator Jojo Tomas, most of the victims believed the poisoning was caused by the spaghetti served during the party.


However, National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) administrator Benito Ramos said he does not believe it was the cause of food poisoning as there were other people who were affected even they have not eaten spaghetti.

Diarrhea downs 39 in Borongan village

AT LEAST 39 individuals were affected by diarrhea in a village of Borongan City possibly due to contaminated water source.


Mayor Fe Abunda, however, said that she immediately sent a medical team to Barangay Santa Fe to provide medical assistance to the victims.

?The situation there is now under control. But we still continue providing oresol and other medicines to the victims. I have also sent my sanitary inspectors to monitor the possible cause of the spread of the disease in the village,? Abunda said.

Based on the initial information relayed to her, the outbreak was first monitored on June 14 and 15.

Several of the patients, she said, were confined at the Eastern Samar Provincial Hospital, some 15 kilometers away from Barangay Santa Fe, which has over 2,000 residents.

The mayor, however, could not say as to how many were brought to the rural health center and at the provincial hospital for medical assistance.

According to Abunda, several of the victims involved a group of families.

?They are using the same drinking water, which is sourced from a deep well,? she said.

The regional office of the Department of Health (DOH) earlier issued a warning of occurrence of water-borne diseases like diarrhea due to the continued rains in the region. (Leyte Samar Daily Express)

2 die in diarrhea outbreak in Albay

MANILA, Philippines - The Department of Health (DOH) today said that it is closely monitoring the outbreak of diarrhea in Albay province, where two people have died from the disease.

A report by radio dzMM identified the two diarrhea fatalities as Maria Napoles, 84 and Reynaldo Amarato, 66, both residents of Daraga town.

The report said that according to Nathaniel Rentillo, Albay assistant provincial health officer, a total of 15 people are confined at the Bicol Regional Training and Teaching Hospital due to diarrhea.
